RN + MBA?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hi all,

I'm considering beginning a nursing program (ADN) at either Broward College or Miami-Dade college in Florida. I already have a BS and MBA (in different business concentrations) and am looking for input into what kind of paths are open for RNs with MBAs, if any. I want to do bedside nursing at a hospital, but am wondering if these degrees complement each other at all.

MBA will help moving up the chain into more management position. But plan on getting the BSN.

Thanks for the response! My plan would be to do the ASN and (hopefully) land an RN position within a hospital that would pay for my BSN so I could begin that right after. I am anxious about moving into nursing with my two business degrees + business background so I was hoping that they would at least complement each other!

Specializes in Critical Care.

My hospital considers an rn+bsn+mba acceptable/equivalent to rn+bsn+msn for nursing management positions

Specializes in Casemanager CCM.

MBA which concentration will be better ?IAM currently working as a casemanager and interested in quality management.

Business and nursing are both pretty broad fields. I think there can be some overlap depending on which aspects of each field but most will involve management or leadership positions away from the bedside. I can't think of too many ways a business background will be helpful to the bedside nurse (other than maybe just an better understanding of leadership styles, organization structure, etc...).

Once you have some clinical experience as a nurse, however, I think there is a lot of possibility to leverage both business skills and nursing experience especially in management/leadership roles. Many nurses have gone back to school to earn their MBAs. Whether we like it or not, healthcare organizations are businesses and, at some level, need to operate as such. Now there is still a big difference between most for-profit business and healthcare but, at the end of the day, healthcare organizations that can't manage their human, financial, and organizational resources effectively are not going to be able to help anyone.

You're in a good position. There are a lot of positions for RNs with MBAs. You'll see it when you start working in the hospital. You can be a charge nurse, manager, director, house supervisor, business analyst, or CNO (Chief Nursing Officer). Of course I would recommend getting your floor nurse experience first, but you will find many opportunities to use both degrees together.

Also as a side note; I've noticed there is a lack of good leadership and quality management in general. If you're a good leader and business minded you can do a lot of good on the admin side with the added nursing knowledge.
