RN jobs and financial checks

Published

Hi all,

I'm about to graduate and will start applying for RN jobs. I'm worried about my financial background keeping me from getting hired.

Long story short--I had great credit until I was unable to get any additional student loans because I'm a second degree student. I eventually had to enter into a debt settlement program just to keep my head above water.

So will this keep me from getting a job? I know hospitals do financial checks too.

Thanks for the advice.

Don't think it would keep you from getting a job..there are other posts about this subject and by and large I don't think most places even look at them

Specializes in burn ICU, SICU, ER, Trauma Rapid Response.

I have had several jobs over the last 5 years (causual and part time jobs in addition to my regular full time job). In 18 years of nursing in 4 sates and a number of hospitals I have never had a hospital check my credit report. I never heard of a hospital doing so. That said I am sure there are some out there doing so but you would know in advance.

I wouldn't worry about it.

That's a separate signature needed since they are running it through the credit bureau. The only places I know that definitely check that is the police departments (and that CAN keep you from getting hired)...so I think you are good. My credit isn't great for the same reasons, so we'll see!

I'm starting my first RN job very soon. The hospital did have me sign paperwork authorizing a credit check as a part of the hiring process. I really don't know if they actually checked my credit or not. I remember thinking this is weird. It's not like I'm going to be handling money. Anyway as a new grad RN, I was just grateful for a job offer in a department I actually wanted to be in.

They also wanted to see my original state license. I know they can go to state DOH website and see that I am licensed. I guess some employers are just extra.

They check it for the same reason police departments do. We come into contact with items that have high street value. If you are deeply in debt and are in collections with everything then the temptation to steal is abundant. That's what the police dept says anyway.

That's interesting. Thanks for the info.
