RN job for new graduate in Columbia, SC

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone! I just recently received my SC nursing license. I am trying to find a job here in Columbia at one of the hospitals. My problem is, it doesn't seem to be hardly any open positions. One of the hospitals has several openings but all requiring at least one year experience. I was kinda stunned when I ran across this. I feel like I am having a hard time trying to find a nursing job. I didn't think I would have this problem. I was mainly wanting an ER position, but now to the point will take almost anything. If anyone has any suggestions on where to go to find open nursing positions or any advice as to where to apply for a job or any other general advice, please help.

Thanks

I'm in Columbia, too...what school did you go to? I'm at Midlands Tech - not quite done....Did you go to Lexington? They usually ask for experience, from what I've heard.

Palmetto Health seems to be the one that most often hires new grads. You may have to go between their campuses (Baptist, Richland, Easley), but maybe not. Go to palmettohealth.com...that should help you more.

Congratulations on getting your license!!! :balloons:

Let me know how it goes.......;)

I will be relocating to Columbia in October. Thanks for the info.

:) Super

Thanks for the advice. I graduated from Alcorn State University, School of Nursing in Natchez, Ms. My husband got transferred to Columbia in 2003 with his job and I had just finished my first year of nursing. We had to move and I was told everything would transfer to Midlands Tech. Needless to say, they would not accept anything, not even pre-nursing. They wanted me to start all over with their program. So I moved back to Louisiana in August 2004 and finished my last year. Actually graduated May 2005. Moved back to Columbia with my husband after graduation. I didn't take the NCLEX until March due to family issues back home. So, I am ready to start work but just doesn't seem to be any jobs hardly avaliable.

I was told Providence and Lexington want 1 year of experience. How do they expect us to get experience if they don't hire new graduates. I have never heard of this before. I did apply to Baptist the other day. Well I guess you could say Palmetto Health, it had all 3 hospitals listed under it. Haven't heard anything yet though.

I know you can't wait to be finished. I was. That was the most stressful experience I have ever been through. I hope I never go through that again. Also, being away from my husband and only seeing each other every 4-6 weeks for 2 days added stress. Don't know about you, my hair started falling out the last semester, which was the worst, not so bad, just so much to do and not ever enough time to do it, and lost about 60 pounds by the time May got here.

Well good luck finishing and congratulations. If I hear from the hospitals will let you know.

Thanks again
