Hi all,
I am a new grad RN and recently applied to a few openings for CA state prison positions. I noticed on my cal careers account under the assessment/exam tab it allows you to see your exam results and ranking. Can someone please explain what the ranking means and if it's accurate? I am currently ranked number 2. Does this mean anything at all/do I have hope for an interview?

It doesn't mean much. The state is very short on RN's and the turn over is high. Corrections is not for everyone. There is a lot of jobs and OT if you want it. Good luck.
In your interview expect questions on cardiac chest pain and opioid overdoses......we have a big problem with drug overdoses throughout the state.

Hey I also am a new graduate and applied to several positions and ranked at 2. I used to work for the state and the hiring process can be long. All those that are ranked 1 who apply will get interviews and if there are not enough pool of applicants from 1 then those that applied and are ranked 2 will get interviews. It just all depends. I heard it can take several months from date of application to point of hire.
@monylo32 Thank you so much for the info!
@nursesftwDo you take nclex already?
@monylo32 yes, I have already taken NCLEX

I currently work in a hospital doing bedside nursing. I do notice we are sometimes short staffed. But there are also more nursing schools now compared to a decade ago just in my area. Used to be only 2-3 nursing schools where I live. Now that’s ballooned to maybe 7-8. But even then, it just seems like it’s hard to find nursing jobs especially for new grads. Yes there’s a shortage but seems like not enough job openings. I don’t know
I’d like to give corrections a try.
How common is it for nurses in the California state prison to get laid off or be part of the job cut? i would love to apply but I fear that in the next recession, my job will be axed coz of the state budget if I do manage to get in.
Lay off ...next to never. One prison lost some RN positions due to a new prison opening and PT's needing to transfer. All these RN's got jobs in other prisons. Most prisons are desperate for staff nobody is going anywhere.

Are these CA State prisons jobs 8hr or 12hr shifts? Really curious to know because the recruiters aren't letting me know. I have a few lined up in norcal and knowing if they are 8s or 12s will determine if I move forward with interviewing.
Thanks!
From what I’ve been told they are 8 hour shifts with possible required overtime but apparently you can find someone to swap with and end up doing 16,8,16 with four days off

I was also gonna try to apply for the state in San Diego as a new grad, and on their exam to be on the eligibility list it says I can use my clinical experience as a student to answer their questions. It seems like they give you a few múltiple choice answers to choose from to show your experience which include 0-6 months, 6 months to 1 year, and so on, I was wondering if my clinical experience would be how long my nursing program lasted, or just the amount of hours that I did during clinicals which would place me on the 0-6 months experience?
