RN certification question

Do you do couplet care (mother-baby)? You might want to think about taking the Maternal-Newborn exam. I took it in 1994 when it was first offerred and I did not think it was terribly hard. Obviously, a lot could have changed in all of those years. Inpatient OB is more geared to the L/D nurse. I took EFM in 2000 and I thought that was more difficult. I do L/D now, so maybe one day I'll take inpt. ob too. Whatever you choose, best of luck! :)

Thank you for your input. I do work in a couplet setting. So, the maternal-newborn exam would make sense. I Just think that it would be worth it. Do you have to work in L&D to take the EFM exam? That would be good also, although I do not work in L&D, however we do monitor women on our floor sometimes. I hate taking tests, but do think it would be beneficial to get certified. When Itook the Maternal Newborn exam, I just worked in mother-baby. Now I work at a smaller hospital and we do everything across the ob-gyn department. I don't think you have to work in L/D to do the efm exam. It is a certificate of added qualification if you already have the RNC. Check it all out on http://www.nccnet.org and again good luck! :)

I took the in-patient ob certification test in 1993. I remember a lot of questions about EFM and interpretation. I wouldn't want to take the test without working in l&d and feeling really comfortable with strips. It would help to take a good EFM certification/credentialing class.

It felt really good to pass though! Good luck with whatever test you decide to take. By the way, I took the test in Spokane, WA and the preceptors were very kind!

Dear Tess RNC, Thank you so much for replying. I am so appreciative of any and all input from other nurses. I do not work, and have never worked in L&D. I think that I should take the Maternal-newborn test. I work in post-partum. I have contacted NCC, and they are mailing me the info. Did you take the paper pencil test, or computer? I'm not sure how long it has been offered on the computer. I'm thinking that taking it on the computer might be better. That's how I took boards. Anyway, thank you again. I really hope I pass!
