RN/BSN to medical school?

Nurses Career Support

Hello,

I'm a nursing student right now but possibly thinking of attending medical school after I obtain my RN/BSN. Any thoughts? Has anyone done this? Good/bad idea?

I'm curious to know how different your program is. My former boss went that route.

most med schools don't require calculus so i wouldnt recommend taking it and possibly dropping your gpa. as long as you have 2 college level math courses you should be alright. take inorganic and physics w/o calc 1 next semester then take the second part to each class over the summer (one each month), that way you only have organic chem to take next fall and you can start taking an mcat review course (i strongly recommend kaplan). you can then take your mcat while you are taking your 2nd semester of organic chem and you can be on the application trail as early as 2013!! if you have any other questions or don't understand this feel free to pm me.

Hello Panamishe. I know you replied back in 2011 but if you are still around Allnurses, I can't PM anyone so I wanted to ask,

How did you balance your pre-med prerequisite courses with your nursing job?

I have been out of school for 3 years and I am considering taking the med school route. It will be a long path and I only did 1 semester of calculus in school. I took the nursing accelerated Org chem which I did not do so well in, so there are courses I need to retake before taking the MCAT but I was just curious how you handled your schedule.

I work in Canada and there are no part time jobs specific to weekends over here so I am right now trying to save as much money as possible for school, get some solid experience in Med Surg and then planning on staying on-call/per diem while trying to go back to school for end of next year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Hope you are having a great time in med school or residency.

Companisbiki--- we are in a similar situation! I want to go to med school-, I plan on taking pre reqs spring semester... Mcat wouldn't be for a year at the earliest since I have a lot of classes toget through. Let's talk- I "friended" you but can't figure out how to pm you or anything else.

Good luck and follow your heart
