I'm taking my Microbiology final next week through Rio Salado, and I am so nervous! I do all the homework and take notes, but I feel overwhelmed by the information. I do NOT want to take it again! Can anyone offer any study tips or advice? Is the final similar to the midterm in terms of difficulty? Or harder? Thanks in advance! :)

I found it MUCH harder personally, I really think it is not a class meant for online. The instructor had was so LAME she always left on Fridays so you could not ask questions immediately before stuff was due (I mean don't most people take these courses because they can't go to a M-F class.) anyway I don't recall the exam itself (so sorry I wish I did.) I only recall that I was happy I was a good essay writer and could grasp the information as a whole.

Thanks for the reply! I know you said you do not remember the exam itself (I wouldn't either!), could you tell me what was more difficult about it? Was it the material that was harder to understand, or were the actual questions more difficult?
I actually did better on the essay questions on the midterm than I did on multiple-choice!
The information was much more difficult in the second half. I really thought I knew it but evidently I did not . I had a much harder time trying to remember the names of the microorganisms and telling which one was which by its cycles and path of infection.So many of them sounded the same to me. the abbreviations they used made it that much harder to learn. I do recall that a lot of my exam came from the labs, but that means nothing since they have several versions of the finals and midterms. I say be able to identify the plates by their characteristics and the different mediums especially. I wish you all of the best on your final! :grn:

I have the same problem:cry::cry:
Hey! Did you take your final yet? I am taking mine tomorrow
I know it isn't everything but know what the microorganisms look like, know your essays and know what the different mediums are and what they are used. I do remember that being a BIG part of my exams, HOWEVER each instructor can focus their exams any way the choose. GOOD LUCK, deep breath and go for it.
Do you mean I should know the lab material / pictures from lab (i.e. from "Classification of Bacteria" and "Biochemical tests" labs)? I don't remember there being any pictures on the midterm, were there pictures on your version of the final? And by different mediums, do you mean the different biochemical tests? Sorry I keep asking more questions, I am just so nervous, I'm not a good test taker! Thanks for all the advice though
Do you recall the different agar and mediums you learned about growing cultures in? And yes in my lab we had pictures of different dishes growing different types of microorganisms and they were on my exam. What microorganism is this? What medium would you grow____ in? type questions.and then describe certain mediums, what grows in them and such characteristics. I hope those make sense.
One more time just so we are clear...I do not know who your instructor is or their focus on the test. Each one has their particular focus and what they may deem important. I would try to list all of the objectives you had for each week labs included and answer them in complete sentences, using an example of any microorganisms that can pertain to them, just so you have that in your mind. Be sure you understand characteristics for the groups of microorganisms and an example of each one. AND REMEMBER TO KNOW YOUR ESSAYS!!!
Yes, I remember learning about the different types of agar and media, but my midterm covered those because they were Lab 4 for me. My final is only covering Labs 6-10, but some of those labs did cover biochemical tests, and media to some extent. I didn't have any pictures on the midterm, but maybe I'll see some on the final! And I realize the instructors and vary, so I should take all advice with a grain of salt. I'm going to review the study guide / essay questions, past quizzes, and labs. Thank you for your help regardless of whether my exam is similar to yours or not!
Goodluck with your final:up:. I have a few more weeks to go.... Still have a little bit of time to prepare for the final:crying2:
