Per our local Staten Island news paper (SI Advance) earlier this week Richmond University Medical Center (formerly Saint Vincent's) is laying off nursing and other staff.

Just this past holiday weekend at a family BBQ was asking my cousin who works at RUMC what things were like, and all she could say was *bad*.
Indeed as the conversation went on other family members from the Island said many persons complain there aren't any "good" hospitals left on SI and if they can go to the City (Manhattan) for treatment.
This is probably not going to help new grads out from Wagner, Saint Paul's and CSI who will be sitting for the board soon and looking for work.

That is pretty sad. There aren't enough hospitals in Staten Island as it is. The Nursing Home/Rehab Center (St. Elizabeth Ann) in Staten Island that I work Per Diem for, is also being auctioned this month. So our positions really depends on the new employer, if they decide to keep us or not . Things are definitely not looking good for new Staten Island nursing grads.
Maybe not on the North Shore, but the South has both campuses of Staten Island University Hospital (one was the former Staten Island Hospital that moved from Cebra and Castelton Avenue, the other former Richmond Memorial Hospital). Bailey Seton (former United States Public Health Hospital), wasn't used much or at least never to capacity. The only other hospital that closed was Doctor's Hospital.
Problem isn' that there aren't enough hospitals, but that Staten Island was allowed to over develop way in excess of what it's roads, streets, and avenues can handle. It amazes me that if one lives anyplace from West Brighton to Port Richmond, to Mariners Harbor and or beyond you are taken to RUMC. Now maybe back in my day that trip would'nt have taken too long, but with traffic today. Indeed was speaking with cousins about the poor girl killed by a truck on South Avenue near the expressway before July 4th and was kind of amazed she went all the way to RUMC.
As for the auction of Saint Anne's from what I've read in the Advance they are working on some sort of "deal" where a well known operator of NYC nursing homes is supposed to *win* but Saint Vinny's is going to have some sort of say for a period of years.
Quite honestly as someone who used to work in the old public health hospital never understood why the Sisters/ Saint Vincent's bought the place. It is huge barn of a hospital built for an entire different era of healthcare. I mean before they had to make changes to bring it up to code there were still huge long multi-bed open wards. Part of the campus is landmarked and the buildings have a heating system from god only knows when, then there is the asbestos. No one really wants to take the property because of the costs.
As for nursing positions on SI,know lots of you girls/guys want to stay local, but there nurses who commute to Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey, Manhattan and so forth.
