Has anyone else applied for Spring '09 at RIC? I hope the letters are mailed this week. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything yet.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Rhode Island College....:banghead:

Good luck, Kelsta, and all of the other applicants! I look forward to happy posts here!

Oh, and Chris---did you get all your stuff for classes yet?? Here's what I bought so far and what I still need...tell me if I am missing anything please!

-Jarvis' Physical Exam and Health Assessment textbook and lab manual

-Curren's Math for Meds book

-HP iPAQ PDA with the PEPID RN Student software (I know we don't need these but I got them anyway)

-Scrubs with embroidery

-name tag

-lab coat

-watch

-reflex hammer

-Littmann soft touch cardiology stethoscope (I decided not to get the electronic one for fear of it getting stolen)

-Hip clip for stethoscope

-compression stockings

-blood pressure set

-penlight

-dansko white clogs

Still need:

-school of nursing patch for the lab coat

-nurse pack from the bookstore for NURS 223

No one ever told me that nursing school would be so expensive! lol! :p

Got to love getting down to the week before the semester starts to find out if you get to go to school this semester or not! I really thought they'd mail them as soon as grades closed like they did last June.

FYI ... Just found out that they were mailed today...good luck guys.

Thanks same to you. Is this your first time applying?

no, second time. I have a 3.7 and I'm a second bachelor. I was not accepted for fall and I'm worried about getting in for spring. Is it your first time?

Yes this is my first time. I am a second bachelors as well. Where did you get your undergrad?

Also, my advisor told me there are about 140 applicants for about 70 or so spots. I'm sure you won't have a problem this time. Last semster I was told there were 280 applicants for 80 spots.

My NURS 220 professor told our class there were exactly 189 applicants for spring and 60 spots open. She's on the committee. Not sure if that info is helpful or not, but I figured I'd put it out there.

Also, to anyone who finds out this week that they are accepted: don't forget to bring in your transcript on the first day of class showing proof that you've either taken Physiology or that you are enrolled in the course for Spring. You also need to go to Providence and have a BCI (criminal background check) completed....and mail in proof of completion to the nursing office. Do this now so you're prepared!!!

I would highly recommend Foote for N220 over Newman, simply because Dr. Foote gives you notes and workbooks, whereas Newman give you only oral lectures. Don't freak out about the short notice; if you're accepted you will get a piece of paper to mail in (I mailed mine back the following day) with your choice of classes checked off. As soon as they receive that paper, the office will register you and you'll be all set!

Another heads up: the books for first semester will run you $750. It was quite a shock to me, so be prepared for that. If anyone has questions, just let me know!

Rhodygirl-- who do you have for health assessment? I must tell you the stethoscope you purchased is really nice, and although it functions both as a bell and diaphragm through the one chestpiece, I would seriously consider exchanging it for now (when yu get to higher level classes that will be awesome, however, for now it will likely be problematic) with a littman classic, or cardiology III which allows you to put a standard bell on one side of the chestpiece. In health assessment the instructors are verrrrry picky about what areas you will be using bell versus diaphram, and during performance exams, the instructor will be unable to properly assess which you are using with that particular stethoscope. Just some food for thought.

As for Newby, I have also heard she is good however, I only reported instructors I had personal experience with.

My graduate nurse license just posted! Now I just gotta pass the nclex! so exciting.

Uh oh. I can't exchange it because it's engraved!!! :( I have Servello for Health Assess. Hopefully it won't be too much of an issue because I just spent an arm and a leg on this thing. Crap.

Worst case scenario buy a cheapo $20-30.00 that has both for that class... I had Servello also, she is great, but she is pretty insistent that your stethoscope has an obvious bell and diaphragm... play it by ear. I wouldn't let her cut your scope down either if your willing to put up a fight, or pretend that you did. Supposedly, shortening your tubing makes sounds more distinct and she likes students to cut them down. However, I would much rather have a little distance from my patients-- how close do you really want to be to someone who is uncontrollably coughing up copius secretions, or is combative?
