RhoGAM given before Contraction Stress Test?

Published

Is RhoGAM given prior to a CST? I thought I'd read somewhere that RhoGAM was given to Rh neg mothers prior to all invasive procedures. Is that true? And/or does that include CST?

Thanks....

RhoGAM is given whenever there is the possibility of intermingling of maternal/ fetal blood during pregnancy in an Rh-negative woman. The contraction stress test (CST) does not present any danger of exposure to maternal blood by fetal blood. The womb or fetal sac is not being accessed by a needle (such as in amniocentesis or chorionic villi sampling). Therefore, RhoGAM is not required prior to a CST.

RhoGAM is routinely given at 28 weeks gestation (placenta may shift or tear slightly due to weight of gravid uterus, possibly resulting in sensitization of maternal blood by a few fetal RBC's). It is also given after an amniocentesis, chorionic villi testing, abdominal injury, miscarriage or abortion (the unborn baby's blood may have been Rh positive) or after delivery if the baby is Rh-positive.

If rhogam is rh+ antibodies that we give to fool the rh- mother's immune system not to produce her own antibodies the when we give it at 28 weeks why doesn't it cross the placenta and hemolyized the infant's blood?
