Reviving the Dead

I am trying to make our 4 day new employee orientation lectures into something that doesn't slowly kill everyone by powerpoint overload. A few powerpoints in and everyone looks like zombies. What are some good alternatives to powerpoints? Thoughts on getting people to participate? Quizes? Games? I just don't want to keep boring everyone to death!

A sense of humor helps ...and getting through the material fast (or at least breaking it up into small sections). People are going to get bored anyway, though. Orientation is just not a fascinating thing.

We've 'flipped the class'... Information is provided ahead of time & participants are expected to review it. Orientation time is spent engaged in actively applying the learning. We do things like: Scope of Practice Jeopardy HR (policies) Scavenger Hunt Where's the Safety Hazard (like Where's Waldo

We have case studies - for demonstrating of charting skills. We're working with the ICP folks now to develop an activity on PEPs... we're going to emphasize correct doffing, because they discovered that this is actually the most error prone part of the process.

Just put on your thinking caps. And I would suggest reading some of Donna Wright's stuff to get inspired. There's no reason that learning can't be fun.
