Rets or Hondros for RN or is there another?? HESI LPN test

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

I have been an LPN for 14 years now, went to a nursing school so no college pre-reqs were done. Want to go back for my RN now and I have heard different things. I read that Hondros may be too hard for me since I have been out of school so long but I dont know. How about Rets RN? Anyone have any advice???? Also, found out I have to take a Hesi LPN exit exam ( which I have heard is hard and covers lots of peds and ob) to get into either. Anyone know anything about this or have any LPN hesi stuff they want to get rid of?? I dont even think this test existed when I was in school!!! I cant find a sample hesi test anywhere on the internet and cant find anyone with a cd-rom. I did good on boards, but a lot has changed and been forgotten in 14 years.

I am currently in the LPN program at Hondros. As far as how difficult the RN program would be for you, I think it really just depends on what kind of a student you are, and how organized you are. I have talked to some of the RN students about the program, and they all agree that it is difficult. (Most of them were "A" students in the LPN program and are now "B/C" students.) Hondros loves to throw a ridiculous amount of "projects" on top of everything else that you have to learn for the courses, so maybe that has a lot to do with how difficult they are viewing it. Hondros is expensive, but I think they really do a good job of preparing you for the NCLEX. The only other programs that I have heard anything about are Christ and Good Sam. (I've heard that their programs are excellent as well.)

As for the LPN Hesi test, every school is going to differ on which parts they require you to take. I believe Hondros only requires reading, math, english, and vocabulary. I know it's only 4 parts and they don't require anatomy/physiology. I found the test to be extremely easy, so I would think that having been an LPN for as long as you have, you shouldn't have any problems.

Good Luck!

I almost forgot to mention that there are some Hesi study guides that you can get, but I think you'll find them to be a waste of money. (I did.) You can do an internet search for the Hesi test and find all kinds of study material that way, for free.

Hi Valerie McCoy,

I found the HESI test to be pretty simple. I took it at Bohecker for the RETS Nursing program that they offer there. If you live in the Cincinnati area, there is no reason to drive to Centerville to go to RETS. Bohecker offers their program, exact same thing.

I have the HESI study guide that I paid $35 for. I live in Milford. I'm not sure where you are, but you are welcome to get ahold of me. I'll let you preview the book and if you are interested in buying it, you can give me $10 for it. I wrote in it while working the problems, but I won't be using it anymore. I passed my HESI at Bohecker with a 93%.

Thanks and good luck.

Lisa

That is so strange. I am talking about the LPN HESI EXIT exam, not the entrance test that covers English and stuff. I have talked to some people who said it is very hard and covers nursing. I think I have to get like a 800 or something on it.

Yes, that LPN exit exam you are talking about is covered in my HESI study guide. In addition to the four parts we were talking about (Grammar, Reading, Math, Vocabulary), that one also covers Biology, A & P, and some other science related parts. I've heard it is pretty hard. Just FYI, Bohecker does offer the RETS school of Nursing LPN-RN progra, just so you know. If you live in the Cincinnati are, you won't have to drive so far.

You can let me know if you want to preview that study guide. It is for the entrance and exit HESI tests.

Sorry! I just reread your OP and now realize that I read it too fast the first time! I thought you were talking about the Hesi ENTRANCE test! As for the exit exam, it is a requirement at Hondros for graduation, and some of the students have difficulty with it. I have been told by my professors that it is a lot more difficult than the NCLEX, so you may want to think about investing in a study guide after all.

The exit exam at RETS is 730 to graduate from the LPN program and 850 to get in the RN program. I would not say it was an easy test. Personally I do not believe there was a way to study for it.

You are right, just get ready for the Hesi exit exam!!!

I'm not sure what you mean by Rets, but I know some people refer to Bohecker that way, and I really strongly advise anyone to stay away from Bohecker (They just changed their name this week too, not sure what too). I went to Hondros for LPN and bohecker students were constantly over at our school talking to our admissions officer. Bohecker lost their accreditation for a short time last year and is more about sales than students.

Hondros is hard, there is no denying that, but I learned more in my first term as an LPN than I did in years of EMT training. They give you a solid foundation to build up from. Their biggest downside (besides the difficulty of the classes) is that since they are a relatively new program (like Bohecker, they've been around for about 3 years), their clinicals are often LTC based.

I know that Rets and Hondros are expensive, if you go to a community college such as Sinclair or Clark State it's so much more affordable. Of course they have waiting lists so I know that is a huge downfall, but personally I can't afford Rets or Hondros, if I could I probably would choose them though.

Oh and with a community college, there is no HESI. (Not that I know of anyways :))
