Does anyone ever retire anymore.
Gold watch and all that???
In all the years I have worked. I have not known many who retired. I think I can count them on one hand.
Most are picked off before the retirement age {which keeps changing}
Or they die, get fired, made to quit for some stupid reason, etc.
I know you just can't wait for your turn...............

I work in med-surg and rarely get the pleasure of seeing anyone retire. I'll probably be one of those picked off before retire because the hard work and stress of med-surg will get to me. I'm currently working on my BSN for some option.

I think there are a lot of reasons most nurses don't have the stereotypical "retirement event." Most nurses are women who enter and leave the workforce throughout their career. Many reduce their hours to part-time and/or per diem prior to finally retiring. Also, mnay employers only give "retirement benefits" to employees who have been working for several years full time prior to retirement.
Add all that up ... and you get not many nurses having that official retirement party. And finally, many who do officially retire, retire from non-staff nurse positions -- so they may not be as visible to large number of people. I've known several people to retire.

military retire in a very wonderful and meaningful way. That is the only example I can think of that still does so.
Well, not many professions begin with a committment to give your life for your country (or command of the President).
