RETAKE RN test after 11 years-what are the requirements

Published

Hi Everyone,

I have been reaching out to ask about the chances of RETAKING the NCLEX-RN for the 13th time since I took my first one 2004 ,my last test was on March 2013- or my last hurrah prior to turning 60, I'd like to try it one more time. How do I go about it.

I am a Registered Nurse from the Philippines, took both LVN and RN Test in 2004 , I passed the LVN but failed the RN, I have been taking it since then, had been in 6 Review Centers all over California meanwhile as LVN took training as MDS, DSD, Wound & Ostomy Nurse Cert & Training, IP Cert & Training,Got Certified also as Quality Assurance Improvement Nurse.

Please Help. Thank you and Totally appreciate the input

With a gap of 20 years from your first attempt at the NCLEX in 2004 and multiple failed attempts, I highly doubt any state would allow another retest without at the very least a refresher course. Of course, it might be possible but you'll have to do some research to find a state that allows both unlimited retakes and such a long time since graduation. If you can find a state that allows this be prepared to move to that state at least temporarily to meet their resident requirements to test and work in that state. You could always apply for licensure by endorsement in your home state after you are already licensed in another state and move back, though again there's no guarantee that would even be approved.

With the time and money, this process will cost you, if it is even possible, you might as well spend that money and time on retaking the RN course.  Since you are a licensed LPN an LPN to RN track at an accredited school will be the most time and cost effective. Again, do your research! Apply for programs at community colleges or local universities. Tuition will be a lot less and with your history of failing the NCLEX multiple times over many years the hands-on learning provided by a traditional brick-and-mortar would likely be a better option than an online program.
