I've always been a good student but up until now I have been able to dump the learned info and move on. I am finally in a nursing program and am struggling to remember the things I learned over the last two years that got me here (A&P, Growth & Development, Micro). I hear things in class and they sound familiar but I am unable to recall them completely. When will it finally "stick"? Anyone else with this problem? If so, what do you do to help retain everything that is being thrown at you?

I am about a month and a half away from graduating and I can tell you that everyone feels that way. Even though I am in my last semester I still sometimes feel like I don't know or cant remember anything. Before nursing school, classes were all about memorization and regurgitating the answers. I couldn't remember anything from A & P or micro so I felt way out of my league. Don't worry it will all come together when you learn to apply your previous knowledge to actual nursing skills. Eventually it all comes together and will make sense. It might not be of any help but as long as you stay on top of your lectures and just review old material as needed it will come to you in clinicals.

I agree with the above post. It will all come together. Just keep reading and re-reading as you need it. Come up with flash cards or mneumonics or whatever it is to help you out. I had a friend at work who I asked to give me random " pop-quizzes " at work. She would just come up to me and say, " So what labs would you expect for a patient with CHF? " If I was wrong, she would tell me the answer(s). That really helped me alot. Good Luck! And HANG IN THERE............:hngon:
