Resume Issue for SAHM

Published

Just seeing if anyone has any insight about how to present a resume for job purposes where there is little to no current job information to present.

I graduate this coming May and will be seeking employment, however this is where I'm at workwise.

I've stayed home with my young children for the past 8 years while attending school.

Prior to that I was in the Army for 7 years. I have all my discharge (Honorable) paperwork to verify employment with the ARMY for that time period, but quite frankly there is no one for a potential employer to contact for references. The Army is a transient entity and no one supervisor stays in one place very long. All the people I've served with are long gone, either gotten out or moved on, and I can't very well tell a potential employer to call the President for a reference :D:hehe:.

I'm very intimidated about my lack of recent work history and how that may reflect on my new career.

Any managers out there have any advice on how to best proceed with this lack work history? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Finding entry level new grad positions isn't always that difficult. Nursing is one of those professions where work history might not always be relavent.

Prior to me graduating from nursing school I worked as a typist and a cook. I left those off my resume and only put the six months I worked as a tech, and I got into a new grad RN position with only presenting a six month work history.

What will get you a job is your degree and a recommendation from your instructor. Work history for the most part isn't important, because so many nurses come from work histories that don't give them an edge. Also note that student who go to college straight from high school and graduate with a nursing degree without work histories have no trouble finding entry level positions.

Nothing wrong with presenting your military history and the fact that you were a SAHM and full or part time student. Relax about it.

Thanks Tweety. I appreciate the response.
