Hi , I am currently preparing myself for RN school in the fall. I am reading the first assignments in my syllabus on respiratory and its diseases and meds. I am having the hardest time remembering the s&s , the meds and i really need help on how to study so that i could be effective in learning what i need to know. Please help me, all suggestions or comments will be appreciated.

Respiratory is a broad topic. Can you be more specific as to what you need to know? When you say diseases and their s&s... there are alot of respiratory diseasees... each have different s&s... each has different meds...

There's Asthma, COPD, emphysema, flu, cold, RSV in peds, measles, mumps, rubella, TB, Croup, and I could go on....

S&S will vary depending on the disease... but with Respiratory compromise you may see things such as Dyspnea, Tachypnea, Cyanosis, Tachycardia, Tripod positioning, Orthopnea, and the list goes on...

Again the meds will vary depending on the disease and the s&s you are treating...

In my opinion, you will overwhelm yourself if you are trying to learn these things on your own. When you start nursing school this fall... your instructors will break it down into logical formats when they lecture. At this time it will make more sense.

My instructors always taught us HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION!

Three times to show the importance. Hydration is very important to respiratory alterations as you will learn when you start class.

Good Luck,

Angie

Agree with poster above. There's no need to overwhelm yourself with this at this time and without the guidance of the classroom. Learning isn't done in a vaccuum. I will give you this much advice though. Although there is memorization in learning nursing studies, it's more important to understand broad general concepts. The students who try to memorize this stuff by rote don't make it. Capitalize on what you do understand and reinforce that. You can build on it and put the rest aside till later.
