Updated CCM® Exam Reflects Real-World Demands of the Profession
By MaryBeth Kurland, MPA, CAE, ICE-CCP | CEO, Commission for Case Manager Certification
The Commission conducts a Job Task Analysis every five years to ensure the CCM credential reflects the real-world expertise and evolving responsibilities of today's case managers. The latest research findings are in, and they reaffirm what we've long known: Board-Certified Case Managers (CCMs) are leading the way in a more complex, client-centered healthcare landscape.
Rigorous Research, Updated Exam Blueprint: 2024 CCM Job Task Analysis Findings
We heard from more than 2,000 practicing case managers—both certified and those not yet certified including seasoned professionals and newer voices alike—about what today's CCM needs to know. In the May/June issue of Professional Case Management, the results of our findings were published in an article titled: "The Continued Evolution of the Professional Case Management Role". Our research showed that the role of the professional case manager is more diverse, data-driven, and client-centered than ever before.
Here are just a few key takeaways based on the survey respondents:
- Thirty-six percent of case managers now hold a master's degree, and three percent have earned a doctorate.
- Nearly 29% have more than 20 years of experience in case management.
- Forty-one percent said their employer requires certification.
- There was increased representation from social workers, rehabilitation professionals, and other health and human services specialists.
This data resulted in an updated exam blueprint changing six instead of five distinct knowledge domains. Most notably, "care management" and "reimbursement methods" are now separate knowledge domains to more accurately reflect the current perspective and vital importance of knowledge needed in these areas for real world practice.
What's Changing for the August 2025 CCM Exam?
Beginning with the August 2025 testing window, candidates will see important updates to the CCM exam in addition to the revised blueprint. Here's what to expect:
- The exam will now include both three-option and four-option multiple-choice questions.
- An optional 10-minute break midway through the exam has been included to further support candidates' focus and stamina.
These updates reflect our commitment to continuous quality improvement and the highest standards in professional certification. For employers and the public alike, these enhancements reaffirm that Board-Certified Case Managers are prepared, professional, and aligned with industry best practices.
When Will the Results Be Released?
Since the August 2025 CCM exam marks the first administration of a revised blueprint, standard-setting procedures require a short delay in candidates receiving their test scores. This means that the candidate's exam results will be released at the end of November 2025, a standard practice in credentialing during blueprint transitions.
