Resources for Psych NP students

Published

I'll be starting my PMHNP program this coming fall & I have been looking for various resources to help prepare myself. So far I have been listening to Carlat Report & also subscribed to psychnp.substack.com both of which have been really helpful for introducing topics. But I was wondering if any practicing PMHNPs have any other resources...? I have the Stahls Prescriber Guide also.

Hello, and congrats on starting your program! I'm a PMHNP student too, I have a year of my program completed and will start the first of my psych courses in the Spring of 2023. The ANA "purple book" (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Review & Resource Manual, 4th Edition, PMHNP) was recommended to me, and I actually just ordered it today. Other recommended podcasts: Psychopharm Updates, Speaking of Psychology, and  the PMHNP podcast.

I hope this helps and good luck to you!

Best,

Kelly

Read the Stahl book from cover to cover.  Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology: Neuroscientific Basis and Practical Applications 4th Edition  Then supplement based on that.  You don't necessarily need a lot of resources.  You only need repetition.  Once you start working you'll pick and choose the meds you use and won't use.  Remember, new "me too" drugs aren't always better, and usually are never better in any meaningful way, yet are always many times more expensive.

I found a lot of USMLE things helpful.  I have been told that is taboo by some other NPs but I found a lot of the material for medical students was very helpful..

YouTube was a great resource for me also.  I would watch videos about USMLE preparation, explanations about MOAs, etc.  It is also a nice break from constant reading/studying.
