Resigned from 1st nursing job due to lack of support / toxic work environment

Published

I took the 1st nursing job offered to me as it was with the company I really wanted to work for, a well-respected, up and coming regional hospital group. Found out a little too late that the particular LTC facility I had been hired to work in was going to be cast off, by the company about a year down the road. The current employees were understandably bitter about this and had experienced a lot of trouble with RNs 'jumping ship' once they had their required 6 months in one position obligation fulfilled. So, I was told that a few would use this particular facility in order to get a foot in the door with this company and move on rather quickly especially since they were being bought out in the near future.

By the time I had come on board, the environment had become beyond toxic in my opinion. On my very first day, the woman who was assigned to orient me announced that she 'didn't FEEL like orienting' and 'didn't get PAID extra' to do it, either! So, it didn't go well with her. I did mention it to the scheduler and later on to the unit manager and they did go ahead and assign me to finish orienting on another floor.

All of the moving around from floor to floor and plus the negative impression I got from the floor I was to soon be working on, became overwhelming for me. I began to feel like if I couldn't trust my collegues, then I shouldn't be working there. It was my 1st nursing job, after all.

Well, I ended up resigning after a month. Somehow, I am still eligible for rehire within this company, which I would still really want to work for. Would it be advisable to continue pursuing employment within this organization? What happened is unfortunate, I know, but they are still my 1st choice overall. Just not at their soon to be ex LTC facility.

Any advice would be appreciated:)

If you were told you are eligible for rehire, then continue to pursue employment there but don't be surprised if it does not materialize. Employers will tell you what they need to in order to block you from any action. Definitely put your energy elsewhere with the thought that you will be hired by a new employer. Good luck.
