During my search for info, (and a big thanks to the very detailed and thorough responses from many well known on these boards) I came across this very interesting column off of the AMEDD site....
I would be interested to hear some weigh ins. Looks great to me, and that is how I would like to start my nursing career wherever it ends up.
Quick follow up questions if I may:
Why does the USPHS start out at O-2?
Is this for real? (from here: http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/nurse/corps_benefits.jsp)
ARMY NURSE ACCESSION BONUS
Start with a sign-on bonus of up to $30,000 or up to $114,900 ($38,300 per year for a maximum of three years) if you elect to not receive student loan repayment. If you participate in the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program, you could earn an accession bonus of up to $10,000.
Am I reading this correctly, that you will receive $38,300 dollars above your commissioned pay scale for 3 years if you do not need tuition reimbursement? So in other words, if I calculate a cash total from the pay calculator of $48,000 (large hunks of that not taxed r/t combat tax exclusion and housing allowance/meal allowance )for O-1 and add $38,300, I get $86,300 a year for the first 3 years (not also factoring in a pay bump in rank along the way), with a large portion of it tax exempt.
I am going to start looking for health recruiters if this is the direction of army nursing. I like it.
workinblues, the information I provided on the bonuses is current as of now - and at 6 months out you can begin making progress towards your actual contract. I'm not sure what you meant by 'wanting to see the reaction of the recruiter'. The actual health care recruiters are distant from those who manage and keep the data on the goarmy.com website and therefore won't have a emotional response about it.... the data is wrong, it's been reported, and the info i provided is general info you can verify by contacting a health care recruiter. Good luck on your path!
Just cause, I appreciate your input. I hope I am not coming off flippant, it is just that there are several versions of what is "the actual story" in regards to specific benefits available from the military. As such, I am intrigued to know what is available, and yes, exactly how much is available, and further, what would be availble in 6 months, 12 months, etc. I am not the kind of person that would be satisfied knowing that I got say 30,000 one time in a deal that I could have got 38,000 three times, if I would have looked harder, or asked a few extra questions.
My wanting to see the reaction was not meant to be insulting, but rather to ask Salamandrina if the recruiter had further input into the state or inner workings of benifits available to new commissioned oficers.
If all of this comes off as "money grubbing" or "That guy is in it for the wrong reasons" I apologize again. I have had a similar experience of vagueness and story shifting about 10 years ago in a recruiter's office (enlisted), for a position and experience far different than the one I am seeking now. I just want to get my ducks in a row this time, before I walk in blind. As opposed to 10 years ago, I cannot put my life on hold for 3 months, jump through every imaginable hoop and then be disappointed in the offer as it morphed into an entirely different "offer".
Workin,
not at all - :)
If you are in school for 6 more months you have plenty of options. If you are at a location where you want to be recorded as your home station - ie when you are done with the army they can pay to move you back to that 'home station'..then you could actually do some of the paperwork and the most important the physical.... and just check with the local health care recruiter on the date when the new incentives are coming out. Usually what occurs is when the new incentives arrive - the old ones are not valid.... there will usually be an end of the year push if your MOS, say nursing, is short and recruiters are trying to fill them. I only say this because projections are not always anythingmore then a guess as they usually occur and shut off the previous deal.
I whole heartedly agree with what you are doing and will be thinking similar thoughts when I am 6 months out. I have some general knowledge as I just got out as a Captain in the Army last year.... going back to school with the intent of entering in as a Nurse. If you have any general questions - I can always give my best guess! Otherwise we are all in the same boat on the route towards nursing in the Army.
hi...i am looking for info on the possible new bonus that may be part of the new defense bill.. it was on the air force times website and is part of the new bill but does not give any $$ amount. anyone see anything about it anywhere?
bonus increases
several bonus increases are proposed. under the house bill, some medical professionals, including psychologists, mental health practitioners and registered nurses, could receive a $100,000 bonus for one year of active service-a temporary bonus that would expire sept. 30, 2010.
the senate has a different bonus, just for psychologists, that would pay up to $25,000 a year for a four-year commitment, plus a $400,000 accession bonus.
both bills propose several other increases, including doubling the accession bonus for nurses to $20,000 and boosting monthly incentive pay by $250, to a total of $1,250. also, nuclear officer incentive pay would be authorized for service agreements of longer than three years.
to encourage training in a foreign language or culture, the bills would authorize a $12,000 annual bonus for officer candidates who become proficient in a foreign language and would create a test program to provide a skill bonus for reservists who receive language training.
the increases would take effect when the bill is signed into law, but the services have wide discretion in deciding when or whether to offer the higher amounts.
prediction: details remain in flux, but bonus increases, especially to get and keep badly needed psychologists, are a sure thing.

in regards to the above red highlighted post, they have changed the wording on it recently, so it appears that officially or not, they are only giving that money for loan repayment, and not (or) a bonus as was the original post(not exactly sure what the difference would be, but i digress..)actually, if you read the wording in the new version,, it still is a bit convoluted, but anyways... just thought i would follow up.
