Repeating 3rd..not because I failed...is depressing

I passed 3rd semester..and then had to take a leave of absence for personal reasons. I've been gone 2 semesters and plan on returning after next semester. I have to take a comprehensive exam that covers semester 1 and 2 med surg before I can be readmitted. the downside is that they wont let me into 4th semester..they are making me retake 3rd again =( 3rd is OB/PEds/Mental health...I dont understand why I need to retake it when I already passed it...and if I pass the exam! If I dont pass the exam I have to start at semester 1 again..

The idea of paying for and taking 3 classes I've already passed...again...just really depresses me.

Has anyone else had to do this??

I'm just being the devil's advocate, too. I hope you don't mind....

There are nurses that are educated in other countries that are able to come to the US and pass the exams to become nurses. They can pass the tests, but barely speak english. Bedside manner? What's that???

Which one makes the better nurse? I don't have the right answer...just a statement.

I find this comment relating apples to oranges. Nurses coming from over seas have the knowledge. they have completed their program of study in their home country and many have been practicing in those countries before coming here. So they have the KNOWLEDGE. Which is what the other commenter was pointing out. Whether they have good bedside manner or proficient English skills is a whole other monster. THey at least have the knowledge. And a good majority of international applicants have concurrency issues and various other requirements they have to process through to even aplly to sit for our countries NCLEX. If they can pass the exam, then they have the knowledge base and can learn the rest like the rest of the new grads in our country.

As for the OP, this would totally suck if you had to repeat, but I can see where the school is coming from. Block 3 is a bit more specialized and they may see it as if you had to defer, some of that reason for deferring may have affected you during your third block so you may have missed content. It has to be the same for everyone. You may have done great in block 3 and not missed a thing, but you have to be treated the same as a student who had issues because there is not always and easy way to tell the difference. And if you don't pass the exam to get into 3rd and have to start over, then as much as it sucks to repeat, it would be necessary. Remember the saying if you don't use it you lose it. It is true to a degree and you have been out of school for a few semesters. The knowledge is not fresh for you. I hope you pass ad can go right into 3rd block, btu as another poster said, try to find the positive in your situation. If you don't, resent can lead to doing poorly

Also, my school has a repeat policy a little different. If you fail or need to defer a block, you have 2 semesters to re enter or you have to reapply and restart the whole course from block one. Be thankful they are even giving your the option to repeat after missing 3+semesters
