Renewing CNA certification?

Published

I got CNA in Dec 2012, and I am taking pre-reqs now. I have not worked as a CNA after I got the certification. I am planning to work as a CNA while I am in nursing program.

How can I renew the CNA certification? I called bunch of nursing homes, and they said they just renew their regular nursing assistant not just random people who want to renew it by volunteering there.

Any advice please!!

What state do you live in? It might depend, but I think you might have to retake the state certification test if you haven't worked as a CNA. Good luck :)

If your certification hasn't lapsed, just fill out the renewal forms and pay the renewal fee. The fee varies from state to state. If it has lapsed, you will need to take the state test over again. I hope this helps.

^^agree, I was in the same boat. Google for your state to renew your license, you will more than likely have to redo the test over, written and skills. In Texas for me, I filled out forms for renewal, I got an approval that is valid for year, its a letter o approval and the application to retest- to take it to an approved facility that will take a person who can take the test without having to go through their school, my fee came out to be 90 to take the test over and also 100 dollar fee for the facility to provide the test. so call it 200 dollars to renew, but definitely beats the 600+ to do the schooling over. Also depending on your state, since nursing school is demanding ( i hear- i hope to start this summer, waiting for a hopeful acceptance letter) there are also (less paying) but caregiving jobs where you wont need the license. Being a caregiver is how I started before becoming a CNA. Assisted living and SOME home health, such as Visiting Angels, you could be a caregiver, work part time opposed to fill time CNA, full time student. You'll know best as far as that- just a suggestion or thought incase renewing license may need to be put off.

I may be mistaken but I believe you need to have a certain number of hours per year, of paid CNA work, before they will renew it for you. I think it's 200 hours each year, or every 2 years. Depends on the state. You can contact the nurse assistant registry in your state and they can give you more accurate info.
