I've been a RN for 20 plus years. 2 years ago I got my first and only DUI. Never been in any kind of trouble in my life. My attorney told me I did not have to disclose this to BON because in NJ it's considered a traffic offense ( not criminal). I just went to renew my license and it asks you point blank if you have ever gotten a DUI. I sure as hell don't want to open a can of worms if I don't have too. Will they find out if I deny it???

Hi, yes they can find out. A similar issue happened to my mother but she was going up to take her state board exam after it happened. They found out she had a DUI and they made her go through a program called RAMP. Still gave the license to her after agreeing to go through the program, it was just a super annoying process. I wouldn’t lie on these things. The BON always finds out at the worst times and they could suspend your license at the worse expected time. I would just take the necessary steps and give the proper documentation so there are no issues. Since it’s your first offense they may not even suspend your license at all. This was also in NJ

Make sure you discuss with an attorney that specializes in nursing board issues.
