Relocating to Cleveland from Columbus...Advice?

Hi All,

I think I have a really strong chance of being offered a position at the Cleveland Clinic, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what the neighborhoods in Cleveland are like. I would just be renting for the first year. I'd like to live somewhere close to restaurants/bars/entertainment. Walking distance is nice, but a short drive is okay too. Also--any places to avoid?

Little Italy is very nice and lots of fun, not to mention Coventry. I would't suggest staying anywhere too close to the hospital. There is also Lakewood which would be about a 15 minute drive or Ohio City or Tremont as well. Very nice, older, hipper neighborhoods.

When are you moving? I'm moving to Cleveland from Columbus for nursing school (2nd degree) and don't know anyone in the area.

Also - do all RNs wear white at Clinic?

Thank you so much for the advice! I'm going to make apt. appointments in all those areas to check them out and see what I like the best.

Funny thing is, my nursing school required white uniforms, so I'm used to it. Luckily I saved my uniform pants :)

I hope to move around the middle of March/beginning of April. I just finished Mt. Carmel's Second Degree Program here in Columbus, so I know what that is like! You'll be super busy, but it is worth it in the end. And yes, RNs wear whites at the Clinic. Good luck to you! Where are you going to school?

I'm probably going to Tri-C. Despite having a bachelor's degree, I need to have a full-time job to survive through going back to school and I can't do that while doing a 2nd degree BSN program.

White looks horrible on anyone - I'm surprised they require it. I always wore pretty and bright scrubs. My patients always used to compliment me on my scrubs and stated that they wished more nurses/techs would wear bright and fun colors.

Housing around the Coventry neighborhood really varies. I would advise you to avoid the streets north of Mayfield Road, as the ones that are adjacent to East Cleveland can be "iffy". Little Italy is mostly nice. You also might want to consider the Shaker Square area, Cleveland Heights, and University Heights (lots of halves of duplexes available to rent in University Heights; look for owner-occupied in the other half [not John Carroll students in the other half]).

Foreverlaur: Part of the problem with nurses wearing all sorts of colors is that patients can't distinguish nurses from dietary personnel, housekeepers, etc. That is why the Clinic has nurses wearing white. However, in specialty units where nurses wear scrubs, they wear the same color.

Best option with Little Italy is to just walk around and grab the phone numbers off the houses. The town is old so its just typically families renting out their 2nd floors. I had an awesome 2 bedroom, 3rd floor for only 500+utilities for a month, but don't get discouraged... since its an old town, expect old quality from a lot of them. It took me 8 houses to look at before I found the one I chose. The neighborhood the clinic sits in is not a nice section of town, so you'll need to pay for parking and drive to work each day (30ish bucks a month from what my friends tell me). Coventry is also good, a little more expensive but worth it too! Tremont also a younger area to live in, though a bit farther! Good luck and just be careful where you look, certain parts of Cleveland aren't so nice of places!

Congrats on the offer with the Clinic! I am hoping to get a job up there when I move up there in June. Can you give me any tips on how you got an interview as a new grad? I am also a new grad from a second degree program at OSU and am wanting to get hired into an ICU. Did you just apply from their website, use a recruiter, know a manager, etc?

As far as places to live, I have some friends that live downtown and in Ohio City and they think those are great places to live!!

Thank you everyone for the great tips! I'm in town right now and checking out everything that you guys advised. So far I love Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Tremont! Haven't made it to Little Italy yet, but hope to soon.

As far as how I got an interview--I applied tons with lots of rejections. Once I got my NCLEX scheduled and was able to put it on my application, I got called. My advice is to wait until you are very close to graduation and apply for jobs in a similar area as where you did your senior practicum. That worked for me, otherwise I got rejected :)

I have 2 interviews tomorrow--so, no offer yet, but a good feeling! Thinking positively! Wish me luck! :D
