Relo from South Georgia to Tampa

Published

Hello to All,

Ky girl here, moved to S Georgia 3 yrs ago and now we are headed to Tampa due to husband's promotion. Looks like the Riverview, Brandon area. I am a small town girl that loves shopping and nice people. Where in Brandon, Riverview do I want to live, (neighborhoods) and I will be a new grad in May, do I want Brandon hospital or St. Joesph's, or Tampa General? My background is OB/Gyn, worked eight years as med assistant in doctor's office. I would like a good post partum unit or women's surgical unit and a hospital that might just buy me out of a contract with a local hospital here. Yes, lots of issues...any and all help would be so greatly appreciated. I have reviewed alot of the threads before this post, great advice, I would love to hear from someone from the Brandon, Riverview area if possible, and the question of the year...new grad pay in these areas?

I live in Tampa from what I know about Brandon and Riverview is that traffic is bad there's basically only one way in and one way out. I don't know about the neighborhoods because there are mostly sub divisions out there. Google Era Polo group or Prudential and do a home search. They have crime stats and school grading systems on them. Shopping is good there is a huge mall in Brandon but the traffics bad because they use the mall as a through street to two major roads. Brandon Regional has a small OB/Gyn floor the hospital itself is nice but not very busy from what I've seen. St. Joseph's has a separate womens hospital. It is a busier facility because of the patients they can treat. TGH is the biggest they just opened a new OB/Gyn floor and they deal with high risk. They are the "county" hospital so you will see all types of patients there. Don't know what the pay rate is for new grads because they base it on what prior experience you have which in your case the MD office experience could factor in and you didn't state which type of program you're graduating from.

Thanks so much for the input Tampagirl, I am graduating from the RN, Associate Degree Program in May. From what I gathered from this site, does $20-23 sound about right for new grads? What are the nice areas in Tampa as far as neighborhoods? Someone mentioned "New Tampa" on another thread? Thanks again for your help.

Yeah that sounds about right without shift and weekend diff. New Tampa is nice but can be expensive depending on the area (Tampa Palms$$$$) UCH is close to there the other hospitals will be car ride to get to. Carrollwood is nice. Hyde Park is nice but $$$ also cloe to St. Joes and TGH. South Tampa is nice close to TGH by and Mac Dill AFB. Town and Country is nice not to expensive yet. I don't know what area your husband's job is but the Pasco Hillsborugh border Zepherhills and Wesley Chapel is nice country and cheaper taxes than Tampa but only 20 mins away. Plant City has a smaller hospital country and also about 20 mins away from Tampa.

Im a new grad as of December and Im studying for the state boards now. I went to school in Orlando but just moved to tampa bc my fiance is going to school here. Im trying to get on with St Josephs. I live right down the street from brandon hospital, but it doesnt have a very good reputation so I think Ill go with St Josephs. Im actually looking at Lakeland Regional too, simply because the traffic going that way is much better than the traffic going into tampa (I know bc I commuted to Orlando during my last semester of school). I figure it would be about 30 minutes. Im still weighing my options. The pay range u mentioned sounds about right. I really cant work anywhere until I get my seating pass so thats why Im still trying to figure it out. I might even wait until I pass my boards so I can just focus on studying for the NCLEX instead of that on top of the stress of a new job. Im currently an LPN doing peds private duty. Feel free to PM me or email me. I also love OB/Maternal but Im thinking of biting the bullet and doing 6 months to a year of med/surg for the experience and specializing after that. We probably wont be in Tampa for too long bc when he graduates we will probably have to move for his job. That will be in October. Anyway good luck in your last semester!
