Registered Nurse from India

Hello everyone I'm new to this site, My wife is a Registered Nurse from India, she will be coming to the US shortly. I was wondering if someone could help us understand all the procedures and tests she has to go through before she can work as a RN in the state of Texas. Thanks

Hi Joe and welcome to the site

What visa is your wife coming over with? She can start the process now by applying to Texas board of nursing for foreign trained nurse and she will also need CES report with CGFNS. Once she has met requirements for licensure she will get ok to sit NCLEX and then register with pearsonvue and can organise exam. It will take several months to go through the process so would also advise her to start studying for the exam and if she has internet access would advice she checks out the NCLEX forum which can be found by clicking the student tab near the top of the page.

hope this helps. Would also suggest plenty of reading on this forum

hey silverdragon, thanks for the links..I called texas board of nursing and talked to a board representive. I was told by the person that my wife will need 2 years of work experience before she can take the test in the state of Texas. So I was thinking of trying to apply at some other state..if you know any better options let me know..thanks

I forgot to mention on the last thread, my wife is coming here on a permanent visa since I filed for her with the uscis. It might take her around 6 months to get here. Also I was told by the board representive that my wife won't need to take the CGFNS if she was enrolled in a english curriculum college back in India, the only thing that she needs is the CES report.

Sorry but I think you have been given the wrong information about needing 2 years experience otherwise how do newly qualified nurses manage and plenty do go there for initial registration ie Phillipines, plus what about newly qualified nurses that train in Texas. I would just go ahead with application for foreign trained nurse and start CES process with CGFNS. If you are a US citizen then she will not need visa screen which is where the language exam comes into it but if the hospital requires it then she may need to do it. Also nothing on their site to indicate need x amount years experience

http://www.bne.state.tx.us/olv/faq-Nclex.html#faq25 Look near the bottom for foregn trained nurse, definately no mention of needing years experience

Agree 100% with what Anna told you. There was never a mention of the CGFNS exam, only the CES needs to be completed and that is a credentials evaluation. That your wife trained in English has no bearing on the CGFNS exam in the first place. If a state requires that exam, then she would be required to take it, even if from the UK, she would need to do it. But Texas does not require it.

And not sure where they told you two years of experience, there are new nurses that get licensed there all of the time.
