refresher course or dual degree program for older inexperienced nurse

Published

I graduated with a BSN in 1969. I worked as a school nurse teacher for two years and then changed to a teaching career after getting an MA in elementary education. I retired from teaching a few years ago and decided to go back to nursing. I took a refresher class, and although I was overwhelmed, I did well considering my complete lack of experience.

The PROBLEM was that when the 6 weeks was up, I was just beginning to understand what I was doing. I definitely needed another year of the refresher course. Remember I didn't have any hospital experience except in nursing school in the 60's!

In the interim, I had two abdominal surgeries, and my career move had to wait. I did manage to complete a drug dosage and calculation workbook by myself.

So now two years after the refresher class, I am not sure what to do. Should I retake the refresher class or should I take a Dual Degree Program which allows students to accelerate by progressively introducing master's courses? I was thinking of transferring all of my credits and retaking all the nursing courses in the bachelor's program. In the meantime, I would be progressively working on a master's in nursing.

I would appreciate all of your opinions.

Thank you so much.
