I am applying to anesthesia school this summer and have been working in a Cardiac ICU for a year. I previously worked in the OR and realized that's when I wanted to become a CRNA. In a month I am transferring to Cardiac Surgery ICU for more exposure to swans and hemodynamics. When I told my current manager I was transferring to another unit, he was mad and told me he would not write a good reference because I have only one year experience and that it would not allow me to have better experience being in Cardiac Surgery ICU. Would it be okay to get a reference from a current charge nurse or have my new manager evaluate me?

Most of the CRNA candidates I have known have a lot more than one year's experience. I understand the entrance requirements include an extensive interview in front of a well rounded panel.
Best wishes on reaching your goal!

Contact the schools that you would be applying to for CRNA school. They will give you a better idea of who can and can not give you a reference. Also, visit the CRNA board here at allnurses ... it is a great resource for those looking to become a CRNA.

Maybe they will accept a recommendation letter from someone else who was your supervisor, like a charge nurse, former preceptor, or clinical specialist. Or maybe even a physician who is familiar with your clinical ability. Requirements vary by school so I would make sure to contact the admissions committee first.
