Hi
I am trying to find out which are the better thermometers to use with neonates. We currently use tempadots in our unit, but have experienced problems with this method. If anyone can let me know what you use in your units, or any useful websites or info/ research that would be great. Thanks.

I hate Tempadots! I had to use them at a couple of Trusts during clinical placements. We use digital thermometers on our NNU. There was a recent article somewhere (Nursing Standard or Paediatric Nursing maybe?) that discussed the best methods of taking temperatures, which confirmed again that neonates temperatures, regardless of product used, should be axillary.

We use flexible temperature probes that interface with our monitors. They are placed either rectally or esophageally for core temp measurement.
I forgot to say - on the ICU/HDU side of things, if we need to monitor temperature constantly, we may have a toe temp. As far as I know, temperature isn't really done rectally in the UK - not in my experience at least.

axillary for us. We have digital with disposable plastic covers. they read in less than 1 min. Very nice for squirmers.
