Hi!

I am planning on taking my certification test for Maternal Newborn in a few months. I know this has been asked before, probably, but I wanted to get some ideas from some other OB nurses. What books can you recommend to study for the test? I have heard different things...the website wants you to buy THEIR book of course:uhoh3: , but I don't want to spend money on a book that is going to be useless, as some of them are. What would you all recommend? My roommate, who has been a L/D nurse for 15 years, will be taking her Inpatient Certification this year too and would like to have book recommendations as to what to study too. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am looking forward to posting here in the future!

If there is a review course in your area, I strongly suggest you go to it. I went to a 2 day class in Little Rock. It covered all the OB emergencies, fetal circulation, a lot on diabetic mothers, acid-base (Yuck) etc.

The people who taught the review course I went to had actually taken the last exam to see what the content was.

A friend and I both attended the course, then took the material they gave us (and there was a LOT) and made study cards. We got together a couple of times per week prior to the test and reviewed. I picked out the areas I was weak in and so did she. We swapped cards and would ask each other questions. There were also a lot of sample test questions that we took over and over.

If I can dig the material out, I will give you more specifics. Good luck.

The best thing is experience. If you have not had much hands on experience with high risk patients, I would suggest getting some. Especially PIH, HELLP syndrome, PP hemorhage, know the S/S of them all and their treatments. What is a therapeutic Mag level? how do you KNOW when your patient is going to crash before they do? Lab values/trends. subtle S/S. For the Newborn, Do you know when its time to call the Doctor or NICU personel when the infant is transitioning? If you feel comfortable then take the test. If not then get more experience. I wish you well
