Recent Excelsior grad needs to move to California

Published

I know the state has now locked Excelsior grads out of the state.

Does that mean they won't grant you a license in their state but if you come to California from another state you can work?

The only thing I can find on the CaBON website is that Excelsior grads must meet their clinical requirements...but they don't really elaborate.

I'd hate to think I'd be stuck working as an LPN...

If you were enrolled with Excelsior college before December 2003 then you can obtain a license via examination or endorsement. If you were not enrolled in the program before December 2003 then NO you may not take the licensure exam or endorse in. If you have completed the program then there is a good chance you were enrolled prior to this date. Check your transcripts to see your enrollment date. I enrolled in October of 2003 so that if I ever moved to California it would not be a problem for me.

I enrolled in November of 2004...this really stinks. There has to be sooomething that can be worked out?

Is this what beaurocracy is good for? What would make a grad prior to '03 be good enough and one that graduated after be inferior?

Please read what I said carefully. It is not the graduating date prior to December 2003 it is your ENROLLMENT date prior to December 2003. If you ENROLLED before this date you are fine even if you graduated after this date.

There were postings about this over a year ago............it isn't something that was just decided on and became law the next day. I suggest that you speak to your school about this. They have known for some time. It is a shame that they didn't tell the students......... :uhoh3:

Actually, Excelsior posted notices both on it's website and in its printed materials that they did not encourage anyone interested in practicing nursing in California to enroll. The problem is with the BRN, not Excelsior. There are however, ways around it. As was also stated in the Excelsior state board prep manual, A valid RN license from any US state qualifies you to work as an RN at federal facilities in ANY state. For most nurses this means working at the VA. There are also opportunities available at Indian Health Service facilities as well as with agencies that have contracts to staff military hospitals. The BRN has no jurisdiction in these facilities. Further, see the thread in this forum regarding legal action against the BRN. Weigh the pros and cons, and that may be a road you decide to take. Best of luck.

yes, I understood. I did not ENROLL until November of '04. All I had to do were the NC exams and CPNE. I really cooked, I guess.

I fully understood my license would be no good in California when I enrolled. Just feel a little panicky because this is kind of a sudden thing.

Any way to keep up with what's going on in California?

Sorry to hear this! I guess you should call excelsior or the Cali board (or better yet--both) to see if anything is in the works. Perhaps like the other poster said, you could work at a VA facility. I am so glad I enrolled before the date. You just never know when you may relocate.
