is this a reason why I shouldn't be a nurse?

Back in high school I worked as a CNA in a nursing home and I did not really like it that much. I realized that working with geriatrics is not for me but I knew that being a nurse is what I really want to do as a career because I ended up doing a job shadow at a hospital. Every time I tell my family I want to be a nurse they always tell me that how can I be a nurse if working in the nursing home did not work out for me. I do know that there are different kinds of nurses out there like pediatric nurses. What do you think I should do? should I not go into nursing school or should I find the right nursing specialty for me?

Specializes in Med-Tele; ED; ICU.

I would despise working in a nursing home.

I enjoy working in the ED.

Specializes in Critical Care.

We can't tell you what you should do - only you know what you want with life. You can work in peds / nursery / mother baby if you don't like geriatrics (but caring for inpatient elderly is different than caring for patients in nursing homes). Just know that you may be in a nursing home for part of your clinicals and will be caring for elderly during school.

Specializes in NICU, RNC.

I despised skilled nursing! NICU is my home. ;) If you are passionate about nursing, you will find your niche. You might love OR, ED, L&D, ICU, etc.
