Really dissapointed in myself

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

Hi guys,

I admit that I am a perfectionist (especially when it comes to academics). I know that employers do not look at transcripts and yada-yada but it has been a point of pride for me to make it this far in my program with a 4.0. I am a PMHNP student and have worked psych for the past two years (I did initially work critical care). Still, my skills assessing for medical ailments rather that psychosocial and psychiatric ailments has lessened. I'm currently taking advanced physical assessment and I HATE it. I just do not feel like it is at all applicable to the work that I am eventually going to do. I work with psychiatrists every day and I have NEVER seen one do a HEENT exam. I am struggling with this course and do not feel like I am going to get an A. I got an 88 on my midterm and a pretty horrible grade on one of my SOAP notes. Just feeling really discouraged. Any advice or thoughts?

Talk to the instructor and ask on their input about hot to improve your grade. My mother is a university professor and every semester she tells me about students coming to her for help when it's too late. Otherwise attend a yoga class and realize that your future will not change one bit if you get a B in this course

A pass is a pass lol who cares

I agree with the above advice. Let the teacher know what's up, and that you really do care about your grade. That usually goes a long way if the teacher knows you are making a good effort. Also, a B is not the worst thing in the world. I used to think I would die if I didn't get an A in every class, but after those first Bs and then a dreaded C, it got better.

If anyone that is giving dread about receiving an B it's yourself. As with so many has responded, passing any NP classes is a blessing. In regards to your health assessment class, not only would I talk to your teacher but assess what is that you are not understanding and getting.

Though you you may be treating psych, the body is always first. Assessment is in everything as a NP. Hang in there and give yourself a little break

Stop beating yourself up. Getting a B is no big deal. NP schools are tough and I don't know any working nurse who has gotten a 4.0.

If this helps, I had a 3.9 for my first Masters. I worked sooooo hard to get that grade. Do you know how many people ever cared (other than me)? Zero. They wanted the degree. In grad school, you have to have A's and B's, so hiring managers already know anyone coming out of an NP program has a high GPA. They won't ask and honestly don't really care if it is a 4.0. They want a state NP license and experience.

C's get degrees girl. One assessment class for a skill you probably won't even be using at a PMHNP is not relevant in the long run. Worry more about pharm and classes directly related to your field.

Specializes in Emergency.

I guess in my program (and most post-grad programs) it needs to be Bs get degrees, anything less is an F, but yea, you don't need to get an A in every class. Focus on passing and gaining the knowledge you need to take the exam and start working. Everything else is gravy.

Well...C isn't degree for NP. Heck B- isn't a degree either lol. I have yet to hear of an NP program that doesn't require a B or higher.
