reading for RN

Published

Hey all, I've been a LPN for almost 3 years and am thinking of heading back for my RN. My question is that since another RN program doesnt start here for a year, are there any nursing books that any one can recommend that will give me a little bit of a leg up before classes role around? Thinking that if I have a year to read some material that it will help come time for classes. Thanks.

Well I am sure there are some general type books you could read but you could also go with subject specific based on either an area or areas you feel you may need more time with as they are more difficult for you to grasp or areas that are of interest to you as far as a future job. IE-- If cardiac is hard for you, getting a book that about reading EKGs and the different heart conditions and meds and all that. Or if you want to work in OB reading up on that specifially. I would say if there is an area you feel is not a strength to use this time to go into it with a lot already under your belt. For me cardiac is hard, and a lot to learn. There is a series of books broken down by topic that I loved and they have a great one on pathophysiology. They are easy to understand and have good illistrations. They give you a lot of info and are not as dry and super detailed as a $150 text book.

Real World Nursing Survival Guide Series--**personally my favorite series.

Also good--- the "Incredibly Easy Series"

They sell these on Amazon but also at any Barnes and Noble bookstore.

Hope this helped!

Saunders Comprehensive Review for NCLEX-RN Examination, Incredibly Easy for RN, ATI RN series (http://www.atitesting.com not available in stores)

Once you are back in school, use your NCLEX books to study for exams. I wish someone would have told me this, it would have saved me a lot of stress trying to get through my instructors crazy notes. Nclex books get to the point and take out the "need to know" info. If you start studying those now, youll be way ahead of the game!

I absolutely agree with chicagostudentnurse. I used Saunders Comprehensive and ATI RN Series throughout nursing school. You get the 'need to know' information from both, without out all the fluff in the middle. Definitely will give you a head start for nursing school. Good luck with whatever you choose! :)
