not knowing all the ins and outs, being on the outside looking in and of course the medical waiver process. nothing is guaranteed no matter how bad you want it:
rare but not unheard of (compared to some others my story is short)???
this is my air force track so far....
8/07 __ air force site chat after finding recruiter email links didn’t work (x3)
8/07 __1st email from air force health professions recruiter
__ my weight is 225. no sports or gym of any type (except yard work).
10/07 __ 2nd email with recruiter
__ i am down to 190 at this point
2/08 __spoke with recruiter first time
__my weight is just below 175
mid 2/08__there is some progress. the recruiter placed me in contact with a chief nurse; emails have been exchanged and also had some of my questions answered by a np.
3/08 __recruiter has transferred me to another recruiter closer to where i live. since than have had no further contact with any other air force personal other than the new recruiter. also on a fun note: today i found out that the time i have been diligently building up to on the treadmill did not transfer to real world running. so it’s out and about learning to run in the real world.
mid 3/08 __noted that last cot class for 2008 is august.
mid 3/08 __first face to face contact with recruiter. my wife and i had two pages of questions and he reviewed
them all with us as well as answering all the questions we could throw at him.
late3/08__ email and phone calls have increased. i am pretty sure he has not recruited any np’s before. has
sent me afccvo forms (bunches of papers: work experience, license and certification history, education
history and multiple reference requests. also now requesting medical records, actual copies of all my ceu’s,
diplomas, licenses, certifications, official transcripts, birth certificate, marriage license, ss card, driver license.)
weight below 168.
end 3/08__talk of tour and interviews now seem to be speeding up.
4/08 __paper work is in. physical is being arranged. talk about looking at bases for “dream list.” not much
information about anything medical on the air force base search page.
4/08 end first week__ recruiter is traveling but also completing my afccvo package.
4/08__ oops some the paperwork i had been given was wrong, time to duplicate effort.
4/08 __ end of 2nd week, recruiter advised me paperwork would be finished and submitted
4/08__ next day received email needed me to call some information to help finish afccvo. day afterwards
i was faxed more forms for completion.
4/08__ oops you need a npi number (national provider identifier).
mid 4/08__ paperwork being sent in without npi number. npi notified me that it takes about 15+ days to get
approved.
4/08 3rd week __called the npi folks advised they were sitting on my paperwork because of address problem.
i was able to get the problem solved and i had my number at the end of day.
4/08__ next day email with first “solid” approximation of pay and rank. notified that august cot still a
possibility as long as application is completed within next 30 – 60 days.
4/08 end 3rd week __notified sign on bonuses are kaput for this year. loss of bonus reduced my contract period to 3 years. this doesn’t really matter to me since i am looking at this as a career move not a job change.
4/08 end __sent a fed-ex package to “complete” afccvo package (i thought it was complete??) recruiter
notified me that my physical is scheduled! later this day in response to my email: the fed-ex paper work is
just to give the afccvo some more information but that is also the start of my application.
4/08 actually the very last day __email: good to go with the paperwork; it has been sent up to
afccvo(??) unable to get my physical date advanced.
5/08__tic-tock, tick-tock … weight 159-161 and frozen! for my size 5.5 to be at my proper bmi
my top weight can’t be above 149.
5/08 1st week__ afccvo wants more paperwork and they also want the originals of all the forms submitted.
5/08 middle first week__ papers are in the mail (again)…. spoke with recruiter today “should be last batch of paperwork for the afccvo folks”…
5/08 2nd week__ physical set for early am next week. mr. recruiter plans to meet me there. also since the base is over 2 hours away he is checking to see if the air force will spring for lodging. still no information on a tour though. weight today 157.
5/08 end of 2nd week__ just spoke with mr. recruiter; after physical my initial package will be complete except (there is always an exception with my paperwork) aanp has to send them some information and he was told by the afccvo that the folks at aanp are renowned for being slow. so if all goes well with the physical and afccvo folks that’s the initial package which is mostly everything so he will send it up the line even without the interviews. so far i am still on tract for cot this year. weight now at 155.
5/08 20th __ i had my physical today and received a dq…. now we wait for the results to see if anything can be done. cot in august is probably down the drain not to mention my air force career. for people interested in taking a proactive stance with about their medical history and how it could affect their chances with the military may want to visit this site: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/613004p.pdf
5/08 end of the month__ still awaiting information on physical / dq. how slow can they go!?!
5/08 last week day__ i was able to track down mr. recruiter. afccvo completed (surprise). the doctor who did my physical has sent it up to the sg; they hope to have a preliminary report by monday. if things get back in line i may just wait until the october cot class. i will be eligible for the sign on bonus plus with but has four year obligation. i am hoping with at least a four year commitment they will see that i will have a better training / use potential.
6/08 it’s monday__ waiting!
6/08 middle of 1st week__ recruiter emailed stated he was out and about but will let me know tomorrow what he has found out.
6/08 end of 1st week__ nothing! i am guessing the 30 day rule is in effect. humor: i did receive an offer to apply for a job at same base where i received my dq, as a contract employee.
6/08 2nd week (monday)__ someone from the lab at the base where i received my dq called my wife today and told her i needed to come in for a re-draw. wife calls me at work. i leave work since i can’t call long distance. call the number given, “oh you need to come back for a re-draw; your blood expired before we could type it”. i asked the person if he knew i had a dq? “no.” how do i get back on base? “i don’t know.” so after that i call mr. recruiter; who is out of office and asks if i can email him what information i have….
6/08 2nd week (tuesday)__ multiple email exchanges with mr. recruiter today. sounds like the dq has not even gone/been sent to the sg… apparently they are still trying to see if they can push it through at the local level (not 100% sure yet)??? so actually i have no idea where my paperwork is much less who will review it or when…. anyway more lab-work this week when they figure how to get me back on base.
6/08 2nd week (wednesday)__ i am starting to wonder if my recruiter just doesn’t know the process or is shooting me a line of bull. i am to report to a 3rd recruiter tomorrow so i can get on base to have a simple typing of my blood done (a 200 mile round trip for 5 minute lab appointment). i have also found out today that no one at the local level had the balls / ability to do anything about my dq. but: since i have had so many wishy-washy explanations about the process i really don’t know what’s going on or if they were still even in the loop. so here i am over a month and it appears my information has been collecting dust in some office. now i get to wait another month (+) for someone at the sg’s office to determine my fate. the whole process is very aggravating so right now i am starting to consider putting out feelers for option b of my plans.
6/08 2nd week (friday)__ i am assuming since for all practical purposes the clinic was closed yesterday that my paperwork / results will be actually reviewed today and sent on up the line…. 30 days from this point will be the week of 7/11…
6/08 3rd week (friday) __ email from mr. recruiter. he is out of town and will try and check for update next week……..
6/08 4th week (friday) __ nothing: have not heard from mr. recruiter.
7/08 1st week__ nothing: have not heard a word…
7/08 2nd week__ day 59 called mr. recruiter was told that he had called a clinic for a response and would call me back… didn’t…
7/08 3rd week (thursday)__ received word that there was still no word. promises to bump it up the chain of command next week if no information by then..
7/08 4th week (monday) __ mr. recruiter advised me that he has been bumped up in his chain of command to see what taking so long.
7/08 4th week (friday) __ no word….
7/08 31st (friday) __ mr. recruiter has called them again and left a message: “will let me know.”
7/08 22nd __ email from mr. recruiter he has asked his boss and higher ups to see if they can stir things up…..
7/08 29th__ email from mr. recruiter that he has again called and left a message with them.
8/08 7th__ one year mark!
8/08 8th (friday) __ nothing.
8/08 13th __ message from mr. recruiter that he should have a response by 11:30 tomorrow.
8/08 14th __ the only information i received was a forwarded email asking about a status update.
8/08 15th (friday) __ nothing.
08/08 18th __ no response to email so i called. told by mr. recruiter that he had spoken with a spoken with the same person at the sg’s office with no more information gained than in days past. i was told i would have a response tomorrow or the o-5 was getting involved…
08/08 19th __ mr. recruiter advised me that my files were being actively reviewed by the sg at this time and i should have a response in the next couple of days. he also mentioned something about how medical had dragged doing their part getting everything to them(??)
8/08 25th __ mr. recruiter will call to see what’s up….
8/08 30th __ even with mr. recruiter talking with his new boss and that person trying to get in touch with the sg… still nothing!
9/08 4th __ emailed to ask mr. recruiter has heard anything and i get a copy of a forwarded email where he is asking a msgt if he/she has heard anything…
9/08 8th __ message from mr. recruiter. apparently i have my waiver. bad news is that i needed two. waiting to make contact with to find out if the air force does the needed workup or not.
9/08 17th__ i had more testing today (on my own dime) and have faxed the results to mr. recruiter. once again the ball is back in the air force’s court….
9/08 18th__ email from mr. recruiter that his files are in the process of being transferred to another recruiter. also advised my results have been sent to the sg today.
9/08 25th__email from mr recruiter that he would be checking tomorrow
9/08 26th__no word
10/08 3rd__no word
10/08 10th__no word
10/08 13th__no word, no response to email sent the 9th
10/08 14th __spoke with new recruiter today he wanted to know how my package was going... he didn’t seem know that my information had been resent to the sg. told me he would call me back when he had more information but that he had to do the work of four recruiters….
10/08 17th__no word.
10/08 23rd__no word.
10/08 24th__mr. recruiter was going to check the status of paperwork and get back with me: didn’t.
10/08 28th __since no response from mr. recruiter i emailed him to ask if he knew if my file was back at the sg.. 40 days now (26 work days)…. less than an hour later and email response from mr. recruiter: i guess i am a toad i think he thinks i was being an ass and was getting mad… he asked me to call him tomorrow. i just actually wanted confirmation my paperwork is at the sg…
10/08 29th__spent an hour on the phone with my new recruiter today. he offered multiple apologies for the delays. apparently he has been in contract with the very first recruiter who made contact with me. i should/hopefully be receiving some preliminary information on my status tomorrow and he is hoping to have my complete file and medical records in hand by monday. sometime the week or two after next my interviews should start coming into focus again (local base or the air force will pay for me to travel)…. so if i understood right; maybe hear something tomorrow should hear something by monday…
10/08 30th__ no word.
11/08 3rd__ emailed mr. recruiter after no word. answer: from a lt colonel to a captain to hopefully have an answer tomorrow….
11/08 4th__still nothing.
11/08 7th __ looks like my air force track may be over. mr. recruiter called and advised me he was able to get in touch with a med-tech about my case. looks like they have a waiver on my hearing but not my blood work..
he will try monday to get in touch with the doctor on my case to find out for sure. this also apparently reflects on the point that my previous recruiter had no idea the status of my medical workup…
11/08 10th __ no news… maybe that’s good news….
11/08 12th __no word so i called mr. recruiter. he spoke with a captain? apparently there is disapproval on my file. don’t know if it’s the blood or the hearing…. my case is going up to the sg!?! i don’t know if anyone really knows! i am pretty sure it’s all but over....
11/08 14th __no word so i emailed mr. recruiter. yet, another promise to bump it up the chain of command monday.
11/08 17th__my new recruiter called me today... my case is on the expedited list with the sg. the reason i am on an expedited list: i have no waivers, my case has not even been reviewed by them. apparently they never received all my information so my case collected dust until it was kicked out of the system.
11/08 20th__ six months since my medical dq and still nothing…
11/08 21st__no news……….
11/08 26th__no news: holiday week so there won’t be any chance of news…
12/08 3rd__no news.
12/08 4th__big, big surprise i actually received an email response from my letter/timeline i sent into recruiting command under my pseudonym:
[color=#3366ff] dear jdcitizen,
i received your letter regarding your unsatisfactory experience
with your health professions recruiters, and i thank you for letting me
know. i am forwarding your letter and timeline to our health
professions recruiting flight chief so that she can get to the bottom of
this and report back to me. it would be extremely helpful to know your
identity and that of your recruiters so i can do all i can for you and
others who may have experienced the same frustrations.
sincerely,
[color=#3366ff]lt[color=#3366ff]col[color=#3366ff] ***
now the decision to respond with my real id as requested… man i am going to have an ulcer by 2009.
12/08 5th__after much thought i have responded to the email today with my real name.
actually received a reply:
[color=#3366ff] mr. **** - thank you. i have forwarded to our new health professions recruiting
[color=#3366ff] leadership for action.
[color=#3366ff] gratefully,
[color=#3366ff]lt[color=#3366ff]col[color=#3366ff] **
no word from mr. recruiter; kind of wonder if he has been contacted.
12/08 8th__no news……….
12/08 9th__no news……….
12/08 10th__no news………. i have two plans that i will be doing further research starting the 19th
12/08 11th__no news……….sent email to mr. recruiter.
12/08 12th __contacted by tsgt. * at robins afb dmar stated only one waiver was needed which was my hearing. but than noted my thrombocytopenia which had nothing mentioned so will be looking into that also now. apparently command had been in touch with them to see what was going on.
faxed audiology results to tsgt. *.
he is also going to call my recruiter who by the way has not answered my email.
2nd callback from tsgt. * they want my medical records (i had turned them in) but specifically on my blood work and kidney stones…. kidney stones where way back.
so i faxed my records related to my blood work. unable to obtain any records further on kidney stones.
called him back and advised him all faxes had been sent.
12/08 16th__not a peep out of my recruiter.
12/08 19th __have not heard a thing since the 12th. plan b is now in motion (2 parts)
a)had an appointment at mcg today about going back to school
b)have traded emails with the us army (and faxed them applications and partial medical records).
as of right now i don’t plan on making any more first contacts with the air force. i have severe doubts that i will hear anything until after the first of 2009. i don’t know if it’s because my second recruiter messed things up so bad or what but things appear to be so screwed up none of them know what is going on.
12/08 24th __ mr. recruiter called and apologized for not being in contact that he had been out of state working on another board. apparently when wr called and asked about my records they had not called him. anyway supposedly with the new resubmission of my records to the sg another 30 day rule is in effect, so he says we should hear something the 2nd week of january or at least he will start calling at that time. so much for the expedited review...
12/08 31st __end of the year: nothing!
01/09 5th__nothing.
01/09 9th__nothing.
01/09 13th__ email from mr. recruiter: “as of monday still nothing back and i am calling ssgt ** again today to get some reason why i don't have any information yet”.
01/09 14th__ emailed and asked if a retired colonel from army command could help and received a response to call him tomorrow by the end of the business day if i have not heard anything.
01/09 15th__ no call so called: out on medical leave.
01/09 20th__ spoke with mr. recruiter. no information. has not been able to get any responses to emails / voice mails from robins afb dmar. eight months since my medical dq and still nothing…

JD, great link to http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/c...df/613004p.pdf >. I think it is very helpful for those interested in the military to review it prior to embarking upon their path to joining the military. I think it is worthwhile to know that if you have a disqualifying physical / mental condition perhaps you should reconsider your goals or mentally prepare for a delayed entry into the military.
I personally feel that for the majority of the conditions it benefits the military to stay stringent on their standards as it hurts the unit and individual when conditions impedes the mission.... that being said I would also realize the recruiters have a mission to recruit x of people and they have limited time and resources. If you have a permanent DQ condition, overweight, need an age profile... and I have other candidates that do not have these conditions - then that is where I will have to prioritize my efforts. This might seem harsh to some.. but perhaps that is from their 'civilian' perspective and those same people might not be well suited for a long term military career.
That being said - JD, it looks like you are motivated and persistent, good luck with your journey~

JD, btw - awesome results...225 to 175 in less then 6 months... amazing results. You mentioned you went from almost zero exercise into your training program - care to share general exercise plan and diet for that transition?
I've seen a couple of people asking on how to prepare for PT in the military and thought your success story and plan could be a good start for others! Impressive!

sure hope it helps.....
#1 i read over “stew smith's diet and exercise information and shaped them to fit my needs.
#1 i went from probably a gallon of dr. pepper a day to none;
no sweetened beverages of any type all i drink is water, unsweetened tea, 1% milk, grapefruit juice... the only time i bend this rule is adding instant breakfast to an am milk intake. no artificial sweeteners.
i learned to read labels: no more than 50 grms fat a day and watched my carbs. if it's packaged its going to be worse than if it came off the produce shelves.
six meals a day: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack (very, very minimal). learn to love vegetables. the steam bags they have out now help a lot make up you own mix add seasoning of choice.
my meal schedule is planned out by the month. i know cheating will happen so i figure it in.
i did go against popular belief: i weighed myself every am.
3 day diet example:
6:30am muffin/milk -- muffin/milk -- muffin/milk
9:30amgrapefruit -- apple slices -- grapefruit
12:30 pm[color=#3366ff] vegetables -- lean cuisine -- vegetables
3:30 pm banana -- veggie snack -- banana
6:30 pm fish/veggies -- mixed vegetables -- baked potato mixed vegetables
9:30 pm grapefruit/juice* -- grapefruit/juice* -- grapefruit/juice*
* either a whole grapefruit or a cup of grapefruit juice.
my exercise plan took several, several attempts:
i found out early on treadmill running does not directly relate to real time running…
i broke it down to upper and lower body exercise days
i kept the weights low but went through the routines at a quick pace...
always took at least two days off to rest the body….
