R.N. M.A.N. from the Philippines wanting to be an R.P.N. or R.N. in Ontario Canada

Published

Good day everyone!

I am a registered nurse from the Philippines graduating from a BSN degree 3 years ago; I recently finished my graduate course - Master of Arts in Nursing maj. in Nursing Administration; I am currently working in a 300+ bed private tertiary hospital as a medical/surgical in-patient unit staff nurse for 2 years now; I am planning to take IELTS later this year; and, I am seriously considering applying as an immigrant in Canada, Ontario most likely, and eventually become an RPN or RN.

Your information and reply to this post would be of much help to me. So I thank you very much in advance.

First, as a BSN and MAN graduate here in the Philippines, will I still be required to take any nursing courses once I get ther? I understand that there is an assessment period of some sorts before being eligible for CRNE, how long does it usually take?

I also understand that if things go well and i become an immigrant, i won't be a nurse until i become eligible for and pass the CRNE. I just want to know if there are many jobs (part/full time) available to me, who is an immigrant, there in Ontario that could help me survive for food and lodging? Are there many small (even very small is ok) rooms/apartment there that such a "part-time job" could pay for while I work on becoming a RN or RPN? (I dont have relatives in Ontario, I do have a couple of friends, I just dont want to bother them)

What would be more practical for such a person like me who is an immigrant, graduating from a foreign school, becoming an RN or RPN?

It would cost atleast $4,000.00 for the immigration processing and everything else to get there. That is why I am on a tight budget. Would it be ok if you could share to me, how much would it cost to become an RPN or RN, from processing, assessment, exam, to registration fees. Just an estimate.

And lastly, when I do become an RN or RPN, how's the employment condition there in Ontario, will it be easy or hard for me to get a nursing job there? I apologize for this question but this is truly a great risk for me and my family, financially mostly, I just want to be sure and get all the information that would help me feel secure.

I know that this is a Handful, but your information and reply will be such a HUGE help.

Thank you and good day!

Moved to the Nurse registration forum

All fees in regards cost with CNO will be on their website.

Depending on your application forum many provinces are now requiring IEN's to take some form of assessment like SEC before eligibility to sit CRNE. If you are deemed eligible to sit CRNE then you can apply for a temp license which allows you to work as a graduate nurse until results of CRNE are available.

You are required as a immigrant to show you have a certain amount of funds per person and that information is available on the CIC website.

Kijji is a good place to look for somewhere to stay and will give costs.

it depends on your assessor and your assessment if they require you to get some course before ul be eligible to write CRNE...but usually those that have masters degree, like my case they didnt require me to do the upgrades, my assessment was i can take the CRNE right away. If ur assessor is fast and all ur requirements are complete the assessment will take like 2-3 mos the most.

for job condition, they are still in need but mostly nursing homes, as currently they are prioritizing the new grads here in ontario and not much for IENs to be hired first, kinda unfair but its reality, there are still jobs available through agency while ur still waiting for the result of ur CRNE eg home health aid, Nurse sitter etc..

and hey, why it would cost you that much to become an immigrant in canada, go directly to cic.gc.ca and do ur research it will save you lots of money if you wont use any middle man to help you with it. Hope this would give you the idea of your future plans... Good luck!
