My question is...........

How does one know if they have 'THE RIGHT STUFF' to become a successful OR nurse? I sure would love to hear from you concerning the matter of any successful stories, and how you perservered.

Also please share, what doesn't make for a good OR nurse. as I am doing self examination before my interview this week.

Thank you

I so want to be a success, and not fail.

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

What makes a good one: The willingness to learn and succeed, people skills, ability to problem solve, are just a few.

What makes a bad one: A holier-than-thou attitude towards co-workers and other nurses, whether they're not at the same education level, or they work in a different area of nursing (as in, disrepect to others). This is the quickest way to alienate people, and there's plenty out there that thrive off of it.

all the above, plus flexibility--it is important to be to "go with the flow" and adjust to changing situations.

Being attentive to details is VERY important in the OR (of course it's important in other areas of nursing as well). Of course being able to prioritize and be organized is important too.

Marie_LPN, and spine CNOR,

Thank you for your input. More please! Your helping your future OR nurse who will be joining your ranks. Rest assured, I am not one of those uppity, snotty, elitist types, .....I'm respectful and regard others as I would want to to treated. I'm a team player with strong desire to succeed, and am detail oriented.

spine CNOR, and others, Could you elaborate more about 'prioritizing' ? and organizing, specific to OR ? I know I could use some tips/ tricks of the trade in this area.

To any OR nurses reading this post, I welcome your thoughts, KEEP EM COMING!
