How Old is TOO OLD to Become an Anesthetist?
Hello, I am over 50, and just started working as an OR RN in a busy teaching hospital. I realize now that I am much more drawn toward the goal of becoming a CRNA. My concern is this..... I will be 55-56 by the time I will have completed all my prerequisites. I 'm healthy, and energetic, . I'm a diploma RN , with excellent grades, in addition 3 years of college, with very good grades. I plan to get adult ICU experience, and do an RNbridge MSN ( I was advised it wasn't that much more time) , or BSN' I am naturally more drawn to the science and technological skills of the nurse anesthetist. I would greatly appreciate your input, as time is of the essence! Thank you, Over Fifty n' Fabulous

Surgical menopause?
Reabock, Wow! Thank you for your encouraging post. I'm glad you look great! I, too, am cheap! I've taken progesterone cream 1/4 tsp. topically for hotflashes, works great. Got it @ the GNC store. I'm concerned about mood swings mentioned in the above post. You do, what I do, I'm always cutting back ! I won't hesitate to have both ovaries taken out now. You mentioned endometriosis. Did you have any problems with its reocurrence? I read that some times it can come back. Did you have it all cleaned out at the time of your hx.?

Surgical menopause?
P RN, Angelbear, and Reabock, Thank you for responding, and sharing your experiences P RN Wow! I'm so sorry for the h--l you had to go thru ,2 more painful surgeries ! I did,t realize these risk factors. Angelbear, I sorry for all the misery you went thru. Could you please elaborate on "I was miserable, make sure you ask for a pain management consult with your anesthesiologist." What prophylactic measurements should I ask for? What type of anesthesia did you have? Wat would you do differently, now that you know what you know? Mood swings? Will zoloft take care of that, in place of HRT?

Surgical menopause?
Dear June, My concern about leaving one ovary in, is twofold. 1. I have severe endometriosis. 2. Possible increased risk of breast cancerif you leave the ovaries. in. My mom died of adenocarcinoma, unknown primary. I dont want to take HRT. And I don't want to look like an OLD LADY OVERNITE EITHER! So any of you out there, please comment. I am 51. My friend thinks it would be best to keep an ovary, in order to avoid being miserable, and crazy! Will I get crazy?

Heavy menstrual bleeding...
Lisa, Boy, can I relate to your experience, and others posted here, except I have been having heavy bleeds and mega clots for years. It was so debilitating that I had to plan my life around my flooding . I could not work due to uncontrolled bleeding every 25-30 minutes . I once bought a pkg of Depends, but could not bear the thought of wearing them. I wear lg. pad sold as urinary incontinence pads, only because they were the biggest I could find. I,m 51, perimenopausal, with heavy monthly periods. Have had endometriosis since I was a teen. I have been on GNRH, progesterone, had D&cs, in the past. My friend has had good results with endometrial ablation, but do check this out with your gyn. I posted today on surgical menopause. Heavy bleeding can be caused by many factors, such as fibroids, and hormonal changes . I will be having a hysterectomy in about 2 weeks. I too, didn't want to go to the Dr. because I had no health insurance, and feared it would be documented as a pre-existing, when I get insurance, but truly, go to the dr. cause you are worth taking care of yourself, no matter about insurance worries. Don't let lack of money stop you, like I rationalized. My dear friend hit me on the head with a 2x4, and said "GO!", and I'm glad I did.

Surgical menopause?
Hello to all, I am new to this website. Your comments and stories have helped to give me courage to return to nursing after a very long absence. Thank you. Now I need your advice, comments, and any insights . Ultra sound showed several large masses inside uterus, and in myometrium, and on R ovary. Uterus should not be so large. Gyn thinks its fibroids, and biopsy was just sent ( results will be in 10 days) I have been perimenopausal for several years, and am done with childbearing. Also have suffered severe endometriosis for years. I am pondering whether to have bilateral salpingo oophorectomy, or leave one ovary in. I will be having a total abd.hysterectomy soon. Gyn wants to make sure it's not cancer My mother passed away from adenocarcinoma of the pleural lining, unknown primary. It manifested as lung cancer. The lung biopsy reported some milk fat globules. I mentioned this to my gyn, and she said that my mom probably had breast cancer. That point was never brought up from my mother's diagnosis. I sure would appreciate any thing you wish to say about this. Thank you .
