Hi all,
Our dept has finally decided to require all L&D nurses to be cert in ACLS. We slid by without it before because we have an anesthesiologist and CRNA exclusively available to us 24/7. Anyway, they are requiring we take a mini class called "OB-ACLS". This is not the regular ACLS, and would not count as such. Some of us decided that we may as well take the real ACLS in the event that we wanted to go anywhere else, but our dept said we would still need to take this OB ACLS as well. Has anyone else ever heard of this, and if so - how is it different than regular ACLS? SG
I took the ACLS OB in Boise ID about 2 months ago. It's straight ACLS with added OB content. Nothing is left out but you actually have 6 added hours of OB stuff added. You get the Americal Heart ACLS card at the end. There is no mention of the OB part on the card. Americal Heart is looking very closely at this program and there was a representative at my particular class that was there to check it out. I took regular ACLS recently and I thought the ACLS OB was very good and our facility is going to make it mandatory for all our L&D staff.
st lukes hospital in boise id has this course. here's the link www.stlukesonline.org/aclsob. hope this is helpful.

Yes...not only have I heard about it....we teach it! It IS, contrary to what has been posted here, an official ACLS course. You receive an ACLS card and an ACLS Obstetrics CE certificate. It is a super fantastic course started by two OB gurus in Boise, Idaho.Their names are: Theresa Standfill and Katie Schimpelphinnig.
We teach the Course at Presbyterian of Dallas four times a year. It is a super cool two day course. Especially for ER nurses wanting to ramp up their critical care skills and OB nurses wanting to ramp up their rescus knowledge.
This is the same 2 day course we take. I took mine about a month or so ago. It was advanced cardiac life support with some OB rescue thrown in. It was fantastic!
Hi Everyone!
I am an L&D nurse at St. Luke's in Boise and have had the absolute wonderful benefit of having Katie and Teresa be a part of much of my education here. The OB-ACLS class is great! I took it about a year ago and it was absolutely worth the extra 6 hours of OB content added on top of regular ACLS, it really clarifies the modifications you would make in a gravid woman while still sticking to classic ACLS priciples. Plus, I am certified by the AHA so if I decided to work elsewhere my certification would transfer. This class is relatively new which is probably why some have not heard of it. I know they travel all over to teach the class and if you have the opportunity to take it I would absolutely recomend it or contact St. Luke's in Boise for more information.
I have managed the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Program since 1994. We have trained over 62,000 maternity care providers in the US alone (over 10,000 RN's).
Numerous hospitals are now requiring ALSO training for all L&D staff instead of ACLS as the ALSO curriculum covers more emergency topics while focusing on patient safety and multidisciplinary team training.

I've heard several docs highly recommend the ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) course for L&D nurses. Here's the link: http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home/cme/aafpcourses/clinicalcourses/also.html
Has anyone ever taken ALSO and what were your experiences? Was it helpful? What is covered in the course?
