"First station" for a new AF nurse?

Published

Hello all-

I'm wondering if there is a typical first duty station for a new AF nurse. I know the Navy has the "big 3".....does the AF have something similar. I see that a lot of people seem to get Lackland so I wasn't sure if that was one. Also, does it depend on if you are a BSN vs. a specialty such as FNP?

Thanks!

i'm also at lackland. just heard this week that our icu should be the 1st af unit to transition to brooks. supposedly, that will happen by December 09 with the rest of the inpatient to follow nlt sometime in 2011. everything sounds fuzzy as far as staffing/chain of command (army vs af) in all of the units, but i don't think it will affect the numbers of af nurses stationed at "lackland", even though many nurses will opt out of base housing since they would be commuting across town. on the wilford hall side renovations are already in play, and hopefully they'll be able to get rid of the depressing 40 year-old brown carpet.

Can anyone enlighten me on the process before you go to COT and afterwards????????? How can I prepare for it best, and what will be needed?

From what the recruiter told me, the big 3 for the Navy are Bethesda, Portsmouth, and San Diego.
