"Cutbacks" that completely ruin my promotion!?!

I attended a Nurse Band 6 interview last year and was accepted for the post. The only condition was to finish a speciality Module. Finished it with great confidence and success. Few days ago my Manager told me that it is unfortunate that I won't be receiving it due to 'cutbacks'. My manager even argued that it was even difficult in ordering supplies for the unit due to 'cutbacks'. I couldn't believe what I just heard and now thinking of looking for other possible opportunities. What do you do if you were in my shoes?:)

Stay where I was but actively look for the better grade job that I was due & move asap.

Did you have a letter formally offering you the position, if so I would seek advice from your RCN representative.

I have band 6's working in my team which will progress to band 7's on completion of competencies, this is written into their terms and conditions of employment letter offering them the post, I am not allowed to change the terms and conditions of employment

Many thanks for your reply, RGN1! It's funny that I was reading the job vacancy pages of the RCN bulletin this morning! LOL! A kinda similar situation happened to my colleague. What he did is he applied a post on a different speciality and when they (manager, matron) came to know about it they gave him his Band 6. I'm not sure if they're just playing 'hardball' with me but I'm seriously considering moving on and will be waiting for opportunities that will come my way. Thanks again.

I'm glad to hear your reply, sharrie! Unfortunately there wasn't any written form of job offer so I guess I don't stand much of a chance of fighting for it. The decision of giving me that Band 6 after finishing the Module was only delivered 'verbally' by the panel. I guess I should have insisted for it to be on 'black and white' instead of trusting their word for it. What annoys me is that I've been performing as a team leader/senior nurse role for more than a year now and I kinda sense that they are just taking advantage of me?!

I do appreciate your response, sharrie. God bless and good luck on our careers.

Tarus without any form of written contract then I doubt your going to get much luck. Although I assume the recruitment would have had to go through Human Resources so I would strongly advice you speak to your HR manager, if it didn't then your boss is going to be in trouble anyway because we have to prove we are recruiting fairly and that is one of the reasons HR is there.

Before giving up speak to HR and speak to the RCN see what they can offer

I think it's a good idea to get in touch with HR,sharrie. I'll seek advise as well from RCN & see what they have to say. Again, many thanks.
