quick question about straight cathing

When straight cathing someone for a post void residual, what is the maxium amout that can be taken, and considered safe?

I don't usually take more than 600-700 ml. If more than that is taken, I was taught that bladder spasms could cause erosion of the bladder mucosa and result in hematuria. :(

no more than 1000cc is what is pretty much rule of thumb, however new research shows you can drain til empty and it wont cause problems....although I still wont go over 1000.

I remembered this thread from a few weeks back.

Our hospital says no more than 1000 ml as well.

According to Potter and Perry 5th Edition Pg 1420 # 30:

" Allow bladder to empty fully [about 800-1000ml] unless policy restricts max. volume." On the Rationale side it says: " There is no limit to the amount of urine that can be drained (Sueppel, 1195; Williams and others 1993)As always the nurse should monitor the client's condition, and if vital signs change or bleeding occurs, temporarily stop the flow of urine and continues when the client's condition warrants. Retained urine may serve as a reservoir for growth of microorganisms" emphasis added by me.
