Quetion on preparing oral meds or med pss

Published

Is it ok to put several meds for ONE PATIENT into one cup if they still have the wrappers on them?

Yes? But, why would you pass meds still in the wrapper? Is there more to the question?

How I teach students to Pass Meds:

1. Read the orders in the computer

2. Remove medications from med dispensing machine

3. Get water and medicine cup

4. Bring medications/water/unopened meds in patient room

5. Open med in front of patient and tell them what it is and what it is for

There are some places where you scan the wristband before you scan the med. It is much easier to scan the med before it is taken out of the wrapper as then the barcode is not ruined.

I am aware. Our facility does this. I suppose I interpreted the question differently than what was meant.

Thanks for the speedy responses!
