Questions about US SSN and licensing in CA BRN

Published

Hi! I just want to ask about the SSN from the United States, for example in California. If you already passed the NCLEX exam, how are you going to get your license from that state if they did not give you a SSN? I know for some of my friends, they got their SSN after passing the NCLEX exam. I mean what's the point of letting people take the exam if they are not going to get their SSN and RN license as well? If you take the exam from a foreign country and you passed it, what are you going to receive after that? Is your license going to be sent to you? I really hope someone answers these questions. It would be a great help! thanks!

Moved your post to a thread of it's own since you posted it on another thread that has a diff. topic. Thank you for understanding.

All State BON or BRN as is the case for CA that does not give a license w/o a US SSN will give a letter stating that you either passed or failed the NCLEX and that letter can be used as proof of passing NCLEX for petitioning purposes and other purposes needed by the applicant.

The hard license is not needed to be able to be petitioned, just proof of passing. Even proof of just passing the CGFNS exam is acceptable to start the petitioning process and that is just a qualifying exam and not even a licensure exam.

Likewise, the few State BON/BRN that do give licenses initially w/o a US SSN will ask for the US SSN for renewing it once it expires and the expiration for foreign-educated nurses that were given an initial license usually expires in less than year or so (depends on the State BON). They have a diff. expiration for their initial license compared if it were coming from someone who from the start presented a US SSN.

A US SSN (for employment) is only given if you applied for it in the US and is only available to those who can present to the SSA office proof of being able to legally work in the US.

A foreigner who has never been in the US could never get a US SSN. A ITIN (and w/c some commonly mistake for the actual US SSN) w/c some were still able to get a few years ago is also now not being granted as easily now as well and cannot be substituted for the US SSN.

Think that you may have a misunderstanding of what the SSN# is as well. It is not specific per state, and is not issued on the state level either. It is given out only by the Social Security Administration and when the person is physically in the US and ready to begin work on a visa that will permit them to do so legally.

So anyone that comes to the US on a tourist visa, does not qualify to obtain the SSN#.

Ca requires one before they will issue a hard license, same thing with the majoirity of other states, such as NJ, FL, Colorado. They will permit you to write the exam, but they will not issue an actual license number until you are in the US and ready to begin work.
