Questions about Riverside School of Nursing.

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hello! I have a few questions about Riverside's nursing program. I have completed the minimum 10 pre-reqs to apply but I have not had high school or college Chemistry. Will Riverside accept a developmental chemistry course? It says that you must pass chemistry with at lease a "C" but the developmental courses are Pass/Fail? Also, does anyone know how quickly the classes fill up and how many spots are available? I will be applying in May for the January 2011 evening/weekend program. How quickly would I receive a response after I submit my application? Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I am currently in the process of applying to this school as well. I am an out of state student so any information I can get would be extremely helpful! What kind of GPA are they looking at as far as pre req's? How long does it usually take for them to accept or deny you? How was the interview and test process? I am so nervous because I would be quitting my job in Michigan (I work as a medical assistant for a hospital) and moving to VA. I have been worried I am not making the right decision but waiting on a school in Michigan can take between 2 and 4 years to get in :uhoh3: If you all can help out in any way it would be great. I am currently working on my essay now!

Hi

I'm finishing up the second month of the first semester of the eves/weekends program. So far I'm liking it all pretty well. As for the grades on the pre-reqs, as long as you get a c or better, you are fine. You won't have a wait list to get in here, The day division will start another class in September, Nights wont until January 2011. Here is a link to the programs and start dates: http://www.riversideonline.com/rshc/upload/Programs-at-a-Glance-2.pdf

Interview process is not bad at all. They will give you an upcheck or downcheck once you have taken the teas test and done the interview. They will give you a conditional acceptance if you still have a couple of pre-reqs to complete.

This is one of the few diploma based programs left in the area and it may not stay that way for much longer. The school has a very good reputation and has been graduating nurses since 1916. The facilities are pretty nice, they took over an old medical office park a few years ago and have separate buildings for labs, classrooms, library and admin offices. Here is a link to their catalog: http://www.riversideonline.com/rshc/upload/RSHC-Catalog-010110f.pdf

Hope this all helps.

Thanks yes this does help quite a bit! I am hoping that I can make it in before they decide to stop the diploma program! I am debating between starting in January or starting in September. Guess I need to make that decision before I send off the app!!

Bob...what are you saying? Are they gonna turn BSN like Sentara? Please share if you have any additional information. Because I'm interested in Riverside after completing LPN school in May of this year. I'm trying to get in the July 2011 evening class.

I would say if you are planning on the JANUARY 2011 class you would probably be ok. There is no July 2011 class. From what I have heard, there is nothing official, but it is being considered, exactly when is being pretty closely held. If they do it like Sentara, they make you come in with 1.5 years of college level pre-reqs and they have 2.5 years of nursing school and you walk out with a BSN. Thats only a half year extra over the current diploma program for the nursing specific part.

From what I am seeing, that would make it harder for some of the younger folks or those that never had any college other than the standard pre-reqs like A&P and Micro and such. Lots of the older students are coming in with a degree or multiple degrees. In class, they stress the need to raise nursing up as a profession equal with others like PT, but the educational requirements for nursing are all over the board unlike PT's. New PT's coming in have a PHD minimum for new grads.(thanks, APTA) Nurses can be Associates, Diplomas or BSN's. So honestly, I think the days of diploma nurses are numbered and even if you do go that route, eventually you will finish up a BSN if you want to move up.

I am hoping that this does not change any time soon as well. I am trying for january 2011. I know that I will go back for my BSN but I would rather do that once I have already been working in the field. Is riverside the only diploma program left??

the closest program in se virginia is in petersburg at southside regional medical center. http://www.srmconline.com/our%20schools/documents/nursing%20program.pdf but if you read through their website, you will see at the bottom of one of the pages:

[color=#096894]** currently, we are in the process of reviewing all of our program admission dates and offerings. at this time, several factors are impacting our course schedule and class offerings for the distance education nursing program for the spring 2010 term; therefore there will be no distance education nursing class admitted for spring 2010, and future admission dates remain under review.

so whether they will continue the diploma program or not is uncertain, i would ask them directly if you are interested and its close enough.

there are also programs out in lynchburg and danville. use this link to find out what programs are available, but keep in mind they still show sentara and bon secours as diploma, but i know both have transitioned over to bsn.
