Questions about OR policies

Specialties Operating Room

I know I have posted a bunch of newbie questions here, but I hope you don't mind two more!

A few hospitals I've spoken with re: OR positions said they have a policy that you must live within 30 minutes of the OR for when you are on call. Is this 30 minute radius standard for all OR's? Do all OR nursing staff go on call? Thanks!

30 years in nursing-27 in OR-always have had call and always had to be within 30 minutes of hospital. Dependant upon type of call (trauma and open heart may want faster response time)-size of hospital (larger hospitals tend to have at least 2 shifts, sometimes 3) also on the number of personnel taking call-obviously the less number of people, the more call YOU will need to cover.

Also have always had the option of asking for additional call-in personel, if needed; this is especially helpful in Triple A's.

I've heard of one nurse who was made exempt from call beause she lived more than an hour away from the hospital, and I'm hoping to try for it at my new hospital, I REALLY don't want to spend call nights at the hospital.

At our hospital we have 15min. response time.. It is this way because we do the c-sections not the L&D dept.,,,,,, :coollook:

hey ferret, I live over 7 hours away, do you think they will exempt me? Just kidding, but I do live 7 hours away. We have to take call no matter where we live and have to be there in 30 minutes. Mike

Thank the stars we don't have to do C/S anymore!

Jeeze Mike,

I hope they have call rooms at your hospital. I take it you live closer to work during the week?

ferret, actually there are sleep rooms where I work and my boss treats me like a traveler so I get sole use to the room. If I had to rent a place, it wouldn't be worth working so far away from home. I like where I have worked for 27 years, but I LOVE living where I do because of the solitude and fantastic mountain views! I do not mind the drive and look forward to going home, like a small vacation.

Hey Shodobe,

how often do you go home?

I go home every other weekend for 5 days. When I am down south, all I do is work, work work!

I applaud you, mate, you're a braver man than I. Where does your dog live? I love the great outdoors, need to work in the city, but decided to live close to work and go camping when I have the chance, which seems to be MUCH less than I originally planned.... (SIGH)

ferret, unfortunately the dog pictured has been dead for about 7 years. She was our big winner during 1986-1989. The picture shown is when she went Best in Show at Westminster. We have had alot of winners over the years but she was the best!

Hey Shodobe,

I'm sorry to hear that. Have you a dog now that has to deal with your travelling, or are you footloose and fancy-free?
