Questions for male nurses

1) How long have you been in the nursing profession? (5 years)

2) How long did you train for and where? (2 years, with a community college, at Mt Sinai (now gone), St Lukes (now gone), University hospitals, Cleveland Metro, Lake east, and Lake West, and childrens hospital.

3) How many men were on your training course?

7 males I think?

4) How many women were on your training course?

111 I think?

5) How many men were teaching on your training course?

Zero

6) How many women were teaching on your training course? all of them...20????

7) What position do you hold, where and how long? Nurse Manager ER, 4 months, staff nurse prior for 4 1/2 years same ER.

8) Where and what positions have you previously held? (see above)

9) How many men are there on your department, how many are in positions of power? (5 RN's, and 5 or 6 medics) Mangers, 2male 2 female, director female.

10) How many women are there on your department, how many are in positions of power? ummm??dunno exactly maybe like about 90, and power see above.

11) Why did you choose a career in nursing? the intrest in the body, diseases, helping people, etc.

12) How did others react to your choice?

shocked mostly!

13) Have you ever been treated differently in work because you are male? Describe. yes usually by older generation female patients.....but understandably. usually related to EKG's and things that invlove body exposure.

14) Do you believe/know there are pay and promotional differences between male and female nurses? Describe. Have no clue.

15) Do you believe women are more suited to the job? Nope......I think each case or worload is situational.

16) Do you think it is easier for men or women to get ahead in the profession? Appears to be women, but I'm not really sure? Just seems the major players in the facility are women.

17) Why do you think there aren't as many men in the profession, and do you see that ever changing? I think there are alot tof people that look at nursing as the bedpan changing, pill passing pee-on proffesion. I also think many men look at it as a "womans" job, or a femenine job.

18) Do you think it is fair that nursing is seen as a female profession?

Don't know? It doesn't bother me one way or another........I haven't a gender problem or issue. My issues are related to stupidity and/or a lack of common sense...and we all know that can be an issue with either Gender.

8. from ER to Neuro, to prison to weight loss clinic to hospice to substance abuse to . . .

9. around 10% and power has never been in my assessment of anyone in health care.

10. 90% and same as 9.

11. To work when I wanted, where I wanted.

12. Never payed any attention.

13. Never noticed I was usually too busy to worry about that.

16. never noticed, but in looking back the ratio was proportionate to the gender census.

1) How long have you been in the nursing profession? 11 years, 12 if you include school

2) How long did you train for and where? One year to the day initially, and evryday since, as this is a lifelong everchanging occupation.

3) How many men were on your training course? At the start 3, at the end 1-me!

4) How many women were on your training course? 32 and at the end 9 of the original class and 2 th1 that was picked up during the year.

5) How many men were teaching on your training course? None!

6) How many women were teaching on your training course? 7

7) What position do you hold, where and how long? To many to list in various settings and specialties by my chioce. Today I work agencies and looking to travel.

8) Where and what positions have you previously held? All in OHIO, Columbus. One on staff at a truama 3 teaching hospital-Neuro/Surg, Home health, Abortion clinic (as close as I could get to my passion OB), Family Practice Nursing Supervisor, Staffing, Corrections, Harvesting Human Donor tissue at the ARC

9) How many men are there on your department, how many are in positions of power? Almost all of them as I supervised aids, CNA, MA, x-ray, phlebotomists, front office, or techs.

10) How many women are there on your department, how many are in positions of power? All of my boss's were female

11) Why did you choose a career in nursing? To help people! Also I have three nurses (my mom is one), a pharmacist, and several beuticians that specialize in doing womens hair at nursing homes

12) How did others react to your choice? Some laughed, my inlaws did not believe I would pursue it.

14) Do you believe/know there are pay and promotional differences between male and female nurses? Describe. Unknown, I do not ask.

15) Do you believe women are more suited to the job? No, absolutely not any one who desires and has the calling is suited!

16) Do you think it is easier for men or women to get ahead in the profession? Women who are a RN!

17) Why do you think there aren't as many men in the profession, and do you see that ever changing? I think it is the social norms that have prevented this from happening, and yes I do see this changing as every male who is or has been a Nurse is a change agent for this to occur!

18) Do you think it is fair that nursing is seen as a female profession? NO!

14. Yes, it has been my experience that men

do the job, and get it done, without all

the bickering, and griping.

17. It will grow as we prove that it is the

care that is given, not male or female,

of who gave it.

18. Until the stereotype is done away with, but with the mentality of the likes as JAY

LENO, it will probably be viewed as a female profession. All nurses need to avoid referring it as a "female" profession. It is actually, "a profession."!
