Questions during a job interview for RN position

Hello All!

I was wondering if you could post questions that you think could be asked during a job interview for an RN position. I am a new grad with a BSN, RN and am still job hunting. I just want to be prepared for any interviews that I will have. Thanks so much! If this topic has already been addressed, I am sorry. (If this is the case, could you link me to those threads?) Thanks again! :)

What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses?

Describe a professional situation in which you have been in conflict with another person. How did you handle yourself?

What would you do if you walked in a room and found a patient... (unconscious/on the floor/choking/bleeding, etc.)?

What attracted you to this facility/hospital/unit?

Make sure to be genuinely interested in the specific unit. Go to the interview prepared with some tidbits about the facility. Example: I was impressed with your quality scores/ your new ___ program.

I was so scared about finding a job when I graduated that I applied to some positions that were not my ideal and ended up flooding some hospitals with so many applications that I think the recruiters started to ignore me! I recommend calling the recruiters about your dream units even if there are not any openings posted online - there may be some soon, and then you'll have the advantage!

Brush up on first aid. What would you do if a patient went unconscious, etc? Go through all the steps you would do (DRABC) & explain why. They may even ask you about advanced first aid as well, ie: what drugs would you expect to be given and why?

They will give you a scenario of patients to look after, and ask how you would manage your time with these patients, what would you do for each condition they have, etc. They may ask you how you would outline/run your whole shift.

May ask you how you would handle conflict (including staffing conflict), or ask how you would handle complaints.

They will ask you about general hospital policies and procedures, about discrimination polices, fire & safety, occupational health & safety to name a few. For example they may even ask what you would do in the event of a fire, so brush up on all of these.

Why do you want to work with us? Really think about it - do some research into the hospital/institution to parrot back to them, and impress them.

Make sure you also have some intelligent questions to ask, and always say you will be able to start as soon as possible.

Be relaxed and smiling. A brilliant way to set the tone for the interview is to tell a little joke at first and get them laughing, then the ice melts a bit.

Always shake their hand/s and thank them for the opportunity of the interview, and mean it.

You will do great, don't worry, just have lots of confidence in yourself, even if you don't feel that way!
