Questions about Ivy Tech Bloomington...

Published

WARNING: I'm a newbie with several questions, some of which may seem silly!

I plan to enroll for prereqs. at Ivy Tech Bloomington sometime in 2009 and have so many questions! Anyone who can answer ANY of these, it's very much appreciated.

1. How do you know what the maximum amount you can borrow (student loans) per semester is? My husband is a student (business) and hasn't been able to find an exact number for himself, either.

2. Were/have you been able to work full-time while being a student? Just during pre/coreqs. or the entire time?

3. I've read a bit on here about a point system for grades/program acceptance rather than a GPA. Other than grades, what factors into this (TEAS, etc.)? And what range is the goal?

4. Exactly how difficult is it to be accepted in the RN program at Ivy Tech Bloomington? I've heard horror stories about how competitive it is. Are only a set number of student accepted per semester/year?

5. When accepted into the RN program, do you have to take your classes in a specific order?

I don't have all the info you are looking for but I can tell what you what I do know.

1. I am not sure what the maximum is that you can borrow.

2. It is DEFINITELY possible to work full time while taking your pre-reqs. I take all of mine in the evenings, and all of my classes have started at 6pm. I even took a saturday class. when you are in the program it might be a little tougher. Once in the programs, I don't know the exact schedule of the program but it classes/clinicals are during the DAY.

3. getting into to program:

it goes by points. those with higher points get in. points break down like this:

A= 30 pts

B= 20 pts

C= 10 pts

Anatomy 1 grade

Anatomy 2 grade

English 111 grade

Intro to Psych grade

Teas score - 100 pts possible on this

-----------------------------

120 for all A's

+100 for Teas

+3pts if you live in the region you are applying for

______________________

total pts available= 223

According to the nursing information session I went to this week FOR BLOOMINGTON: The lowest score admitted last year was 207 which was basically 4 A's, 3 pts for living in region, 84 teas score

***some campuses are more competetive than others***

4. see above. also I think she said that 60 students get in the whole year. I *think* she said 50 for fall, 10 for Spring. I know Columbus takes 120 a year (60 fall, 60 spring)

5. Don't know this answer. Not in program yet.

Hope any of that helped!

i don't have all the answers, but from speaking to one advisor, she said the nursing program is very elite , it's hard to get into, but once you're in she said most students pass the boards. :nurse:

i've found getting and understanding information from ivy tech is like pulling teeth at times. i really can't understand why they have to be so vague. i guess they think you're supposed to know all there is to know about how ivy tech works and all the steps necessary to complete the paper work and all the classes you need. sorry to burst the bubble on that one. i mean i'm not totally stupid, but this is all very new to me and i really haven't a clue about the steps i need to take or the order in which to complete them. :confused:

one person (advisor) says one thing and another tells me something completely different. then the handouts included in your package say's something neither one of them told me. it's like tossing darts into the darkness and hoping you'll hit the target. :banghead:

Thank you for taking the time to answer my (many) questions, IndyIvy. I'm very new to this and I appreciate your patience and understanding. :)

Wow, 60 students for the entire year?! That's intimidating! And I'm sure that hundreds apply for the program, right?

LPNHopeful- My husband has two semesters left until he receives his business degree from Ivy Tech, and he seems to have more trouble with support staff/professors/student loans/constant website changes every semester! Something is always being changed about the way you apply for this or register for that, yet he is never informed of any changes. I guess they do expect you to just know what you're doing or figure it out as you go.

I forget what the 1st year is, but I am pretty sure the second year is $9500. $3000 in subsidized and $6500 in unsubsidized. You should be able to go to any Stafford Loan website and pull up the updated maximums. If you are looking into private loans, the maximums are much higher but they pull your credit.

2. Were/have you been able to work full-time while being a student? Just during pre/coreqs. or the entire time?

I am a single mom, so I have no choice but to work full time. I am also only doing pre reqs right now. I took 2 classes over the summer and I am taking 4 all together this semester. Its requiring a LOT of time management but so far I am managing to pull it off.

I think someone already answered this so I will skip it :)

From what I know, there are set classes each semester, and I know for the first two semesters you take the classes on the outline. The 3rd and 4th semesters are a little more flexible. You should attend the nursing info session- they will give you a complete semester by semester list of the classes plus more info as well.

I'll go with these two questions from my own experience.

I've been taking prereqs since Fall 07 and have always worked full time through them. I work 6:30a-3p and have classes either online or in the evenings, generally from 6-8p. I tend to do a lot of my homework and studying on the weekends, especially for online classes. I'm only doing prereqs part time since my husband is a full time student/part time worker.

Once I get into the program I hope to not have to work, but if I do need to work, I will do part time. I am a stress monkey and I'm sure I could do it with working full time, but I'd rather not try in case my head explodes.

From what I've heard Bloomington is probably the hardest campus to get accepted to. The reason for this is that we only have one hospital to work at, BH, and they have to have space for us and for IU nursing as well. Fall semester has 40-50 RN students and Spring has 10 from what I've heard as well.

There's a good chance that I'll end up at the Indy campus though because if my husband gets a job right after he's done with most of his schooling (Jan/Feb 09) then we'll probably have to move to Indy.

Just to add....

Columbus accepts 60 PER SEMESTER. They take 120 a year! big difference!

Not sure about Greencastle, but Indy takes about that many too I believe.

This semester, Indy took 6 RN and 60 PN. I believe they are taking the same come Spring.
